About The Position

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, is recruiting for a Geologist 2 - Surficial Geologic Mapper in Fairbanks, Alaska. This position involves work that improves understanding of the distribution and character of near-surface geologic materials and landforms. Important outcomes of this work include facilitating the identification of construction materials, helping identify geologic hazards, and providing valuable information to support land-use planning decisions and to support the overall safety and well-being of Alaskans.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.
  • One year of entry professional level experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the collection, storage, analysis, visualization, and distribution of geographic-based data and maps.
  • Identifies a need; gathers, organizes, and maintains information; determines its importance and accuracy, and communicates it by a variety of methods.
  • Develops networks and builds alliances; collaborates across boundaries to build strategic relationships and achieve common goals.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of scientific principles related to environmental, ecological, biological, or physical science and the methods and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry, including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, and the reporting of results.
  • Uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition in support of remote field investigations and associated travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Geologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in any science major, which includes the completion of 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in the above geoscience fields and 24 additional semester hours (36 quarter hours) of course work in natural sciences, may substitute for the education requirement.
  • Equivalent combinations of professional experience and graduate level education in the geoscience fields described above are acceptable and will be considered as follows: 24 graduate semester hours=one full year of graduate education=one full year of professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • With guidance from project managers and other DGGS staff, collaborate on tasks to create geologic maps and associated digital data using GIS
  • Collect, compile, and analyze geologic data to support material resource and hazard assessments or other projects where surficial geologic data is necessary to help DGGS fulfill its mission and goals
  • Assist project managers and other DGGS staff with field season preparation.
  • Participate in helicopter-supported fieldwork to gather data supporting surficial geology-based investigations
  • With guidance from project managers and team leads, write reports and prepare figures and presentations to disseminate geologic information
