About The Position

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst supports the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) by maintaining, analyzing, and visualizing geographic data that informs programs, policy, consultation activities, and community initiatives. This position provides technical GIS expertise through the development of high-quality mapping products, spatial analysis, geospatial data management, and cartographic support. The GIS Analyst works collaboratively across multiple MNO Branches to ensure spatial information is accurate, accessible, and aligned with MNO cartographic and data governance standards.

Requirements

• College Diploma (1 or 2 year); certification/degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Geomatics, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, or a related field; or An equivalent combination of education, apprenticeship, technical certification, and relevant experience
• Less than 1 year of experience of GIS experience, including co-op placements, internships, apprenticeships, academic projects, or related employment.
• Basic experience maintaining and updating geospatial datasets.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to learn new software, tools, and organizational processes.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Valid Class G driver’s licence (or equivalent) with the ability to travel and operate a rental vehicle, where required.
• Foundational knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) principles, cartography, and spatial data management.
• Experience using GIS software (ex. ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online) through education, co-op placements, internships, apprenticeships, or employment.
• Basic understanding of spatial data collection, data editing, and map production.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and quality.
• Ability to organize and maintain digital files and datasets.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
• Dependable, self-motivated, and willing to learn new skills and technologies.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Willingness and ability to travel occasionally within Ontario and work flexible hours when operationally required.

Nice To Haves

• Experience creating or editing maps and working with GIS software is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Use ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online to manage, analyze, maintain, and publish geospatial data and mapping products.
• Support in developing maps and spatial products to support the RRP; LRC branches, and other MNO programs and initiatives.
• Maintain structured, well-documented geospatial file storage systems to ensure long-term accessibility, version control, and data security.
• Support in updating, maintaining, and integrating geographic datasets from internal and external sources.
• Perform spatial analysis, geoprocessing, data extraction, and data manipulation to support operational, planning, and policy needs.
• Convert physical maps and non-georeferenced digital information into accurate GIS datasets and map layers.
• Implement and maintain best practices for geodatabase design, metadata, naming conventions, quality assurance, and data integrity.
• Review and validate datasets for accuracy, coordinate systems, completeness, and compliance with MNO cartographic and publishing standards.
• Provide cartographic, analytical, and technical GIS support to MNO Branches and project teams.
• Support internal staff and external partners to collect, organize, and maintain geographic information required for organizational initiatives.
• Support in producing maps, reports, and presentation materials that communicate spatial information effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Work independently and collaboratively while communicating effectively with coworkers, partners, community members, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
• Promote the values of the organization by maintaining professional relationships with employees, citizens, elected leadership, volunteers, and community partners.
• Report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, and accidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and MNO policies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
