About The Position

Performs as a trainee in a planned training program in learning and applying the basic principles, methods, techniques and processes of designing and producing thematic map data and applications using a computerized Geographic Information System (GIS); and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in physical or natural science, geography, engineering, planning, computer science or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Receives orientation in the basic principles, methods, techniques and processes of designing and producing thematic map data and reports using a computerized GIS
• Learns to interpret aerial photographs and maps to delineate elevations, wetlands, vegetation, agricultural land, urban land and other geographic land use characteristics
• Learns to convert data from various sources for entry into the GIS database
• Enters delineated information into the GIS through digitizing, key entry, or other standard map data entry procedures
• Learns to design and produce maps using GIS software
• Learns to write computer programs to format data and assists in developing the database for map production
• Investigates and verifies geographic and land use data by making physical inspections
• Participates in producing final prints and reports using various types of printers and plotters
• Performs other related duties as assigned
