Genomics Scientist

Bureau Veritas•Boston, MA
•$45 - $50

About The Position

The Genomics Scientist builds and validates next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based assays to characterize the genomic safety of next-generation gene-editing technologies. The role designs and implements molecular and genomic assays, develops automated NGS library preparation workflows using liquid-handling platforms, and supports IND/CTA regulatory submissions. Working cross-functionally with the off-target biology team, the scientist applies expertise in primer and probe design, amplicon and hybrid-capture sequencing, and structural-variant detection across primary cells, iPSCs, and in vivo samples. The position is based in the Consumer Products Services division and reports to the Manager. Hours are typically Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, with flexibility required to meet departmental needs and complete other assigned projects. The role also contributes to project coordination, quality processes, scientific documentation, research, and the development of departmental procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field.
  • At least four years of experience with NGS, molecular biology (including primer design and cloning), and automated laboratory workflows.
  • Experience designing primers and probes for amplicon sequencing, digital PCR, and cloning to support NGS assay development.
  • Strong experience operating Illumina NGS platforms, including NovaSeq, NextSeq, and MiSeq.
  • Experience designing custom NGS library preparation workflows, including targeted amplicon, hybrid capture, and UMI-based error correction.
  • Experience with human primary cell and iPSC culture, and LNP- and electroporation-mediated delivery.
  • Proficiency with Geneious Prime for primer/probe design and cloning workflows, FlowJo, and GraphPad Prism.
  • Python scripting skills for NGS data analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in groups and with colleagues and clients.
  • Organizational and time-management skills, ability to multitask, and ability to prioritize workload to meet or exceed deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Attention to detail, a positive attitude, self-motivation, and a high level of engagement.
  • Ability to present facts and recommendations effectively.
  • Technical problem-solving and process-improvement skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including approachability, relationship building with internal and external contacts, initiative, and adaptability.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted in place of the stated education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with automated liquid-handling scripting.

Responsibilities

  • Work cross-functionally to deliver genomic safety assessments in an agile and timely manner.
  • Work with the head of the off-target biology team to develop novel assays for characterizing genomic safety across gene-editing modalities.
  • Maintain detailed scientific documentation in an electronic notebook.
  • Perform final reviews and interpret data and reports, including critical error review.
  • Review and close root-cause analyses and corrective actions.
  • Work directly with external contacts to implement new testing or process initiatives.
  • Assist in coordinating technical and administrative aspects of departmental projects and provide direction to technicians.
  • Conduct background and literature research to support research goals.
