About The Position

At Bayer, we are seeking a Genome Editing Scientist with expertise in protein science to contribute hands-on to the discovery and development of an industry-leading genome editing toolbox. This role focuses on optimizing proteins for genome editing applications, integrating hands-on protein science with computational approaches to enhance editing efficiency and specificity. The position involves working in diverse and empowered teams to contribute to Bayer's mission of 'Health for all, Hunger for None'.

Requirements

  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, protein science, or a related field, or equivalent experience, with strong hands-on laboratory training.
  • Demonstrated expertise in protein purification, characterization, and functional analysis.
  • Strong background in molecular biology techniques and protein engineering.
  • Experience with recombinant protein expression systems and optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with core protein biochemistry techniques, such as chromatography and enzyme assays.
  • Ability to leverage computational approaches to guide experimental protein science.
  • Experience using AI-enabled protein design and/or protein language models, and related structure prediction tools, to inform protein engineering.
  • Track record of collaborative research demonstrated through publications or presentations.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to adapt research directions based on project needs and emerging findings.
  • Skills in generating, manipulating, and interpreting experimental data.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with protein structural modeling workflows.
  • Experience studying or engineering protein–DNA/RNA interactions.
  • Prior exposure to genome editing systems and/or plant biotechnology applications.
  • Experience contributing to invention disclosures and/or intellectual property documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and characterize proteins for genome editing applications in crops.
  • Develop biochemical assays to evaluate editing component performance.
  • Apply AI tools and protein language models to accelerate protein engineering.
  • Apply protein structural modeling to accelerate protein engineering.
  • Analyze protein–DNA/RNA interactions relevant to editing systems.
  • Collaborate across teams to validate optimized proteins in plant systems.
  • Contribute to publications and intellectual property development.
  • Communicate research findings through presentations and written reports.
  • Stay current with scientific literature in protein science, AI applications, and genome editing.
