About The Position

The Cancer Genetics team at Corewell Health offers a collaborative and supportive work environment. The team includes 6 genetic counselors (with this position being a 7th position due to growth), a genetic counseling assistant and 2 additional support staff/patient care coordinators. We offer a variety of participation modalities for patient care, departmental collaboration, and healthcare team engagement, including both virtual and in‑person options. We provide genetic counseling services to patients diagnosed with cancer as well as those with a family history of inheritable cancers. Position Details Work within a well-established, highly productive Cancer Genetics team Support from the larger Medical Genetics and Genomics Division Monday-Friday, no call, no weekends Hybrid position with up to 1-2 days onsite/week

Requirements

  • Master's Degree
  • CRT-Board Cert Genetic Counselor (BC-CGC)

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the needs of patients, significant others, and family members.
  • Provides genetic counseling services, evaluates educational needs, and develops and implements appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Documents care/teaching consistent with documentation guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Acts as a consultant and resource to other members of the health care team.
  • Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
  • Makes appropriate referrals, and acts as a patient or family advocate.
  • Collects data and develops and analyzes reports, as requested.
  • Competent in obtaining, reviewing and evaluating extended family history information.
  • Promotes inquiry within the health care field by utilizing the scientific method to research clinical issues and strategies.
  • Participates in scholarly activities such as publication in a peer reviewed journal, presentation at a scientific meeting, and participating in peer education by in-services or lectures.
  • Participates in educational programs for other health care professionals, educators, or lay public.
  • Contributes regularly to the Genetics Department publications.
  • May be required to provide continuing care by telephone or other means of communication to patients or other members of the health care team outside of regular business hours, and/or from an offsite location.
