About The Position

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates cases of individuals who die within New York City due to criminal violence, accidents, suicide, sudden apparent health issues, unattended deaths, deaths in correctional facilities, or any suspicious or unusual circumstances. OCME's mission is to protect public health and serve impartial justice through forensic science and medicine, providing answers to support families and communities during times of profound need. This role aims to enhance sudden death prevention by expanding OCME’s genetic counseling, molecular genetics testing, and referral capacity for living family members of individuals who died suddenly and unexpectedly. The Genetic Counselor will provide pre- and post-testing counseling, write reports, guide medical examiners, engage in educational activities, and contribute to medical literature.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology, or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required.
  • Must meet all qualifying requirements at the time of application.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in criminalistics, forensic science, or analytic chemistry (specific years depend on assignment level: I-B requires at least one year, II requires two years, III requires three years, IV requires four years).
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted for certain assignment levels.

Responsibilities

  • Provides pre-testing counseling, including reviewing decedent's genetic test results and their impact on surviving family members, discussing advantages/disadvantages of family genetic testing, and outlining clinical evaluation and management options.
  • Refers families to clinical programs and provides information on family support resources.
  • Obtains informed consent for OCME testing.
  • Provides post-testing counseling, reviewing test results and recommendations, and referring family members to appropriate clinical programs.
  • Writes genetic counseling reports and drafts targeted variant testing reports.
  • Guides medical examiners on the interpretation of genetic testing results.
  • Maintains frequent communication with clinical partner programs.
  • Conducts various educational activities related to genetics and genetic counseling, such as lectures and grand rounds.
  • Mentors rotating genetic counseling students.
  • Writes manuscripts and posters for medical literature.
