About The Position

Provide genetic counseling services within the Cancer Center to patients, families and significant others facing the impact of a potential or actual diagnosis of cancer. Provide individualized assistance related to insurance verification/authorization of genetic counseling services. Assists providers and caregivers with appropriate genetic test selection and results interpretation.

Requirements

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC); preferred board certification. required.
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in cancer genetic counseling required.
  • Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program required.
  • Deep and broad knowledge of the concepts of cancer genetics.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent assessment skills and the ability to creatively problem solve.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including relationship building, negotiation, persuasion, marketing and advocacy.
  • Ability to handle many tasks at one time, organize, set priorities, work independently, and manage time
  • Ability to work in stressful situations, manage conflict.
  • Knowledge of oncology health care operational and financial environments preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cancer risk assessment and genetic counseling services to individuals or families at risk for an inherited predisposition to cancer, discussing inheritance, recurrence risks, cancer screening options, testing options, and test results.
  • Assist the oncology team in the clinically appropriate test selection process in a cost conscious approach.
  • Participate in clinic and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to provide expert opinion related to genetic counseling to establish an appropriate plan of care.
  • Support patients in identifying resources relating to medical and non-medical needs.
  • Assist physicians with interpretation of complex genetic test results.
  • Participate in ongoing development of department protocols.
  • Communicate with referring providers and provide education.
  • Participate in community outreach and cancer conferences and committees.
  • Provide medical staff education.
