About The Position

Genetic Counselor Graduates function under the supervision of a Fully Licensed and American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certified Genetic Counselor or under the supervision of an American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) certified physician leader to provide patient and family counseling, research, coordination of specialized care including lab data, specimen collection, retrieval of data and referrals, consultation with other patient care specialists and referring providers. They also provide staff education as needed. This graduate position is for those not certified at the time of hire and who must be supervised by a board-certified geneticist or a certified genetic counselor. It is intended to be a temporary position while the caregiver works toward being fully licensed. This Genetic Counselor Graduate job can be utilized for up to 12 months while caregivers are working toward preparing, testing, and passing the State Boards examination (obtaining a Full Genetic Counselor license). After that 12-month period, or if the Genetic Counselor Graduate fails the State Board exam a third time, the caregiver can no longer remain in the Genetic Counselor Graduate job.

Requirements

  • Master of Science degree in genetic counseling from an ACGC-accredited institution or equivalent.
  • Temporary Licensure for practice as a Genetic Counselor in the state of practice.
  • Broad knowledge base of current developments in treating, diagnosing, and counseling in genetics.
  • Ability to research and review scientific literature and publications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Some work completed toward gaining certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
  • Certification by the ABMG or ABGC is required within two years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, this position provides genetic counseling services to applicable patient care specialists and referring physicians.
  • Utilizes specific detailed knowledge of genetics and acts as a consultant with applicable patient care specialists and referring care providers in providing professional options for the development of a collaborative plan of care.
  • Responsible to complete interview history and counsel patients referred for genetic testing, and other circumstances as well as obtaining medical records and preparing family pedigrees by utilizing medical literature in the analysis of genetic disorders related to individualized patient care.
  • The position provides individualized patient and family education emotional support, and counseling including analysis of options for current diagnostic testing, care and intervention, and future ramifications for self, family, or offspring.
  • Maintains contact with patients while waiting for diagnostic results, when results are received, and as appropriate for support.
  • Documents and records contact with patient, ancillary services, communications, and counseling by complete and appropriate documentation.
  • Completes documentation to support billing requirements and completes charge sheet at each patient visit in order to facilitate timely billing.
  • Coordinates and presents reviews of appropriate cases of care to peers, residents, students, and colleagues and communicates clearly and directly in oral and written form to providers and patients and participates in peer review by providing and receiving objective and constructive feedback with peers.
