Genetic Counselor Graduates function under the supervision of a Fully Licensed and American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certified Genetic Counselor or under the supervision of an American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) certified physician leader to provide patient and family counseling, research, coordination of specialized care including lab data, specimen collection, retrieval of data and referrals, consultation with other patient care specialists and referring providers. They also provide staff education as needed. This graduate position is for those not certified at the time of hire and who must be supervised by a board-certified geneticist or a certified genetic counselor. It is intended to be a temporary position while the caregiver works toward being fully licensed. This Genetic Counselor Graduate job can be utilized for up to 12 months while caregivers are working toward preparing, testing, and passing the State Boards examination (obtaining a Full Genetic Counselor license). After that 12-month period, or if the Genetic Counselor Graduate fails the State Board exam a third time, the caregiver can no longer remain in the Genetic Counselor Graduate job.
