About The Position

The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is seeking an entry level Human Resources Generalist to serve as a key Human Resources point of contact for a diverse group of employees at all levels including, faculty, students, volunteers, research, and administrative professional and staff members, at DRI’s Reno, NV campus. This role provides timely and accurate payroll, benefits, record keeping, recruiting, orientation, performance tracking, HR information system and management, and employee guidance. This position will be responsible for compiling data reports, surveys, and HR metrics; and providing consistent policy administration, interpretation, and communication aligned with the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). This position requires an individual with exceptional customer service focus, who is committed to ensuring DRI's HR needs are handled efficiently, professionally, and confidentially.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Human Resources, Business, or closely related field
  • Six months of professional human resources experience or one year of related work experience
  • High level of proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with team members, leaders, employees, other NSHE institution contacts, and vendor points of contact
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve problems at the lowest possible level, using creative, win-win solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with discretion and confidentiality handling personnel matters and information

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using applicant tracking, HR information systems, databases, and/or electronic filing and tracking tools
  • Technical knowledge of Federal and State employment laws, including clear understanding and application of policy and procedure manuals
  • Experience with recruiting methods focused on broadening the pool of applicants
  • Human Resources Certification (e.g., PHR, SHRM, HRM, CHRP)

Responsibilities

  • Serves as liaison for DRI employees with payroll, HR, and division business staff
  • Ensures the confidentiality of HR related information is maintained at all times
  • Leads hourly and technologist full-cycle recruitment process and provides support for faculty and postdoctoral recruitments as needed
  • Actively sources potential candidates to attract a diverse pool of applicants; seeks out relevant sourcing opportunities, including attending and staffing conference booths
  • Processes and monitors payroll transactions and compensation changes in Workday including monthly FTE changes, promotions, merit and pay increases, reclassifications, technologist conversions, allowances, awards, working out of grade and stipends
  • Conducts new hire orientation for hourly employees and volunteers in an organized, welcoming, and professional manner
  • Works with employees regarding their separation dates, advising employees of impact of various separation dates to their benefits and payouts
  • Processes HR purchasing and requisition transactions in an accurate and timely manner
  • Performs other general HR duties, as needed
