About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is accepting applications for a full-time General Trades Worker (GTW) position located in Newington, CT. This position will be responsible for the general building maintenance and renovations of all homes in the region, the regional center, and other office areas. The GTW role is vital for maintaining the health and safety conditions of critical facilities to ensure compliance with licensing, DPH, and the State Fire Marshal’s office.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in one or more trade areas.
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in one or more trade areas.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of a variety of trade areas.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating trucks and power equipment.
  • Experience in responding to emergency needs.
  • Experience providing emergency/on-call snow removal duties.
  • Experience operating lawn and garden equipment.
  • Experience driving small dump truck with trailer.
  • Experience with computers including Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, etc.
  • Experience using internet browsers to utilize Work Order systems.
  • Experience working in facilities occupied by persons with disabilities.
  • Experience working in multiple building trades.
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of commercial, institutional and residential facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs highly skilled maintenance and/or construction work requiring the application of trade skills, codes, and standard trade practices in a variety of trade areas including but not limited to: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVACR, glazing, masonry, painting work, etc.
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel, and material required on assigned tasks.
  • Keeps necessary records.
  • Performs duties related to the trade or trade areas as required.
  • In smaller trade areas, may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area.
  • At state owned airports may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations.
  • May operate and maintain heavy earth moving equipment.
  • Performs related duties as required.
