About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – Southbury Training School – is recruiting two (2) full-time, General Trades Worker positions. These positions are located at 1461 S. Britain Road, Southbury, CT. The role involves performing highly skilled trades duties in various trade areas, including maintenance and construction work requiring the application of trade skills, codes, and standard trade practices. This can encompass electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVACR, glazing, masonry, and painting. The job also includes making estimates for time, personnel, and materials, keeping necessary records, and performing related duties as required. In smaller trade areas, a worker might be the sole person running a skilled trade area. At state-owned airports, incumbents may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations. They may also operate and maintain heavy earth-moving equipment.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in one or more trade areas.
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in one or more trade areas.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of a variety of trade areas.
  • Skills interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.
  • May be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a warehouse, distribution center, maintenance storeroom, or industrial supply environment.
  • Experience receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing, and maintaining inventory of maintenance, custodial, or facility-related supplies.
  • Experience using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word especially regarding inventory tracking, communication, and recordkeeping.
  • Experience in responding to emergency needs.
  • Experience providing emergency/on-call snow removal duties.
  • Experience working in facilities occupied by people with Intellectual and or developmental disabilities.
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of commercial, institutional and residential facilities.
  • Experience performing preventive and corrective maintenance on commercial or institutional facilities.
  • Experience working in multiple building trades.
  • Experience working within a centralized maintenance or Physical Plant environment supporting multiple buildings.

Responsibilities
