About The Position

The Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC) is a 99-bed hospital located in Gallup, New Mexico, adjacent to the Navajo Reservation. GIMC handles a significant workload, serving as one of the largest facilities within the Indian Health Service, with approximately 250,000 outpatient encounters and 5,800 inpatient admissions annually. It is the largest staff facility in the Navajo area. The hospital offers a range of clinical specialties including internal medicine, cardiology, anesthesia, OB/GYN, general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, ENT, radiology, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, emergency medicine, and urology.

Requirements

  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Board-certified by the American Board of General Surgery.
  • Currently hold BLS certification through the AHA or ARC.

Responsibilities

  • Approximately 95% of the time will be involved in direct patient care.
  • Be present in the operating suite for all General Surgery procedures.
  • Discuss all cases in morbidity and mortality conferences and provide appropriate information for departmental reports.
  • Provide consultative services at the patient's bedside if the patient is not ambulatory, and in the clinic setting if the patient is able to report to the outpatient clinic.
  • Schedule procedures for completion within 30 days of the date of consultation.
  • Enter a pre-operative progress note documenting findings, diagnosis, plan of treatment, discussion of surgery with the patient, and choice of procedure before it is performed (may be completed up to 30 days prior).
  • Document an operative report immediately after the operation or procedure, describing the procedure, operative findings, and condition of the patient.
  • Provide all General Surgical Services, including pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and follow-up.
  • Follow all timeliness requirements for documentation, including operative notes, operative reports, admissions, and/or pre-procedure notes.
