About The Position

The City of Fresno is located in the heart of the state in the fertile San Joaquin Valley. This dynamic city is the hub of a region rich in heritage, resources, and people. Fresno is a unique mixture of more than 80 different nationalities. The Fresno VA Medical Center is the main campus and provides a number of health services. This role is estimated to be approximately 95% of the time involved in direct patient care. The surgeon will be present in the operating suite for all General Surgery procedures and will discuss all cases in morbidity and mortality conferences. Consultative services will be provided at the patient's bedside if the patient is not ambulatory and in the clinic setting if the patient is able to report to the outpatient clinic. Procedures shall be scheduled for completion within 30 days of the date of the consultation. A pre-operative progress note must be entered in all cases of surgery, and if circumstances permit in cases of emergency surgery, which provides documentation of the findings, diagnosis, plan of treatment, discussion of surgery with the patient, and choice of the specific procedure before it is performed. The pre-operative note may be completed up to 30 days prior and shall indicate the details of the case, what has been discussed, and that the planned surgical procedure has been approved. An operative report shall be documented immediately after the operation or procedure, describing the procedure, operative findings, and condition of the patient. The surgeon shall provide all General Surgical Services, including pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and follow-up in addition to the operative session. The surgeon must follow all timeliness requirements for documentation to include operative note, operative report, admission and/or pre-procedure note.

Requirements

Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
Board certified by the American Board of General Surgery.
Currently certified in BLS and ACLS certifications.

Nice To Haves

No specialty cases required (ex. no GI scopes, vascular, bariatric, colon/rectal, C-sections, trauma, breast, etc.)
Patient volume in the clinic setting is an average of 7-10 cases per day
Currently, there are two permanent general surgeons on staff
The average number of surgeries performed per week is 2-5 cases
Call ratio is every 3rd day
Call backs are only associated with emergencies, and as such are difficult to accurately predict, but the expectation for callbacks is very low
There is a DaVinci robot at the facility
The schedule is established as such: a 40-hour work week plus on-call 10 days per month/16 hours per day, and on-call weekends coverage (every 3rd weekend)

Responsibilities

Be present in the operating suite for all General Surgery procedures.
