General Superintendent - Mission Critical

LED FastStart•Metairie, LA

About The Position

The General Superintendent, Mission Critical is the field-execution leader for RNGD’s data center, critical infrastructure, high-availability, central utility, network, technology, and other technically intensive projects, including work in or adjacent to live operating environments. The position establishes and enforces a consistent portfolio-wide field operating system, develops future field leaders, and partners with the Sector Leader as the portfolio grows geographically. It leads integrated field execution while respecting the technical authority of design engineers, trade experts, commissioning authorities, qualified vendors, and client operations teams. The role reports to the Sector Leader, Mission Critical. Project and area superintendents report to it for field execution, planning, staffing, development, and performance, while maintaining dotted-line relationships with project executives and operations leaders responsible for project financials, contracts, and client commitments. The General Superintendent partners with project management, safety, quality, scheduling, and preconstruction, and coordinates with the Trades and Manufacturing sectors when their self-perform, prefabrication, or multi-trade component work is installed. It is an enterprise field-leadership peer to the General Superintendent, Commercial Construction and the General Superintendent, Trades. The position sets field standards and operating rhythms; deploys and develops field staff; leads advanced planning, work packaging, constraint management, multi-discipline integration, area- and system-based completion, commissioning readiness, safety, progressive quality, trade and vendor coordination, phased turnover, and project startup. It represents field execution in pursuits and preconstruction, builds field-leadership capacity in new geographies, and spends most of the week on jobsites. Its explicit field decision rights include approving field staffing, logistics, phasing, mobilization readiness, and field readiness for releases and handoffs; reallocating field leadership and self-perform resources; resolving field execution-sequence disagreements; and stopping work when safety or readiness conditions are not credible. Commercial or client matters are escalated to the Sector Leader, and technical matters to the responsible technical authority. RNGD is a rapidly scaling construction organization headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, with additional offices in Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama. It describes itself as focused on innovation, creativity, culture, community, team and leader development, and growth throughout the Southeast. RNGD is an equal opportunity employer.

  • Clear communication from crew level to executive team and ability to align field, project management, and support functions.
  • Commitment to coaching, feedback, mentorship, and developing future field leaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent field experience is also accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Define, publish, and enforce portfolio-wide Mission Critical field operating standards, adapting them to project type, client program, delivery method, and market.
  • Assign and deploy project and area superintendents across the portfolio, forecast staffing needs, and maintain succession, development, retention, and bench-readiness plans.
  • Coach and develop field leaders and establish advancement pathways from field engineer through general superintendent.
  • Require advanced planning and work packages tied to areas and systems; verify phase, area, and system readiness and withhold releases when conditions are not credible.
  • Own the field portion of schedule recovery through resequencing, staffing, shift strategy, and constraint removal.
  • Lead multi-discipline systems integration and installation sequencing; manage owner- and vendor-furnished equipment interfaces and coordinate long-lead equipment, utility interfaces, and permanent-power milestones.
  • Establish area- and system-based completion structures aligned with startup, commissioning, and turnover plans.
  • Own field readiness for equipment setting, alignment, terminations, point-to-point checks, and pre-functional testing; ensure deficiencies are closed before handoff.
  • Set expectations for high-risk work and govern interfaces with live operating environments, including tie-ins, shutdowns, and methods of procedure; stop work when safety or readiness conditions are not credible.
  • Establish progressive quality completion, oversee first-work reviews, mockups, benchmark installations, and inspection readiness, and manage area- and system-based deficiencies through documented closure.
  • Set and enforce field expectations for trade partners, and coordinate equipment vendors, factory technicians, utilities, testing agencies, commissioning teams, and client operations teams.
  • Integrate RNGD self-perform and Trades scope into project sequences and provide the conditions needed for those crews to perform.
  • Lead field execution of phased turnover; support integrated systems testing, owner training, and demonstrations; drive field documentation and operational readiness.
  • Represent field execution in pursuits, preconstruction, and constructability reviews; review logistics, phasing, work packaging, energization, and commissioning durations; lead consistent project startup.
  • Develop field-leadership coverage, mobilization plans, onboarding, and supervision structures for new geographies, campuses, and multi-site programs.
  • Run a consistent operating cadence with superintendents focused on safety, quality, staffing, production, constraints, readiness, development, and upcoming work.
  • Spend most of the week on jobsites, reserving office time for planning, staffing, and leadership commitments.
  • Approve field staffing plans and superintendent assignments in coordination with project executives; reallocate field leadership and self-perform resources when demand competes.
  • Hold final field operating authority on execution-sequence disagreements, escalating commercial and client matters to the Sector Leader and technical matters to the responsible technical authority.
  • Approve site logistics, work packaging, phasing, mobilization readiness, and field readiness for area and system releases, equipment setting, and commissioning handoffs within technical acceptance criteria set by others.
  • Carry a substantive voice in field-leadership selection, promotion, succession, and performance review.
  • Exemplify RNGD’s values, communicate across field and executive teams, build partner relationships, and promote accountability and continuous improvement.
