About The Position

Valmont is seeking a motivated individual for the General Shop Help position in its Houston, Texas Coatings Division. The role prepares products and materials for galvanizing by hanging angle on spreader bars, staging tubular products, and preparing small parts. The position works on the first shift, Monday through Friday, from 5:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., at a stated rate of $17.00 per hour.

Requirements

• Read and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Accurately read a tape measure.
• Communicate problems or needs to departmental supervision.
• Lift up to 50 pounds from ground level to shoulder height or higher.
• Be physically able to stand for long periods, including the length of the shift, in an open-air environment, wear PPE, and maintain a safe work environment.
• Maintain a high awareness of safety.
• Demonstrate passion, integrity, and the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.

Nice To Haves

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Six months of previous experience in a galvanizing position.
• Six months of previous experience with hand tools and gauges, including impact wrenches, air grinders, drills, taps, oxygen acetylene torches, and mill gauges.
• Six months of previous experience operating a bridge crane.
• Ability to communicate and interact positively with coworkers.
• Ability to pay attention to detail and follow work instructions.
• Certification in heavy equipment operation, including forklift operation.

Responsibilities

• Inspect production fixtures, chains, and hooks and ensure their safe use and disposition.
• Hand-wire small to medium-sized parts to racks for pickling or galvanizing.
• Pull and place chains and ropes around steel bundles for racking.
• Move lightweight steel pieces by hand between locations in the plant and yard.
• Perform paddling functions to improve the quality of galvanized products, using air guns to blow off zinc needles.
• Use air- or electric-powered tools to prepare or clean steel for pickling or galvanizing.
• Assist with general plant cleanup and housekeeping.
• Work safely and protect oneself and others from accidents and injuries.
