The General Office Assistant is responsible for accurately entering customer vital record information to produce certified copies of birth records. The role uses the Birth Registry System (BRS), an electronic integrated vital records system, to build an electronic database of records. Using various computer systems, the assistant prepares data from indexes, card files, birth records, and other documents for transfer into BRS. The position also processes follow-up requests and answers inquiries to resolve problems related to vital record requests. There are two vacancies, both filled as limited-term assignments. A limited-term assignment may have the potential to become permanent, but there is no guarantee. The position is based at 333 South Grand Avenue in Lansing, Michigan. Remote work or an alternate or hybrid schedule may be considered based on operational needs and within established limits. Approved remote or hybrid work must be performed within Michigan. Employees are provided computers for state work, and phones may be provided as needed. Remote employees are responsible for other office components at their own expense, including a private, secure, distraction-free workspace, high-speed internet of at least 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, and suitable lighting, furniture, and utilities. Successful completion of a background investigation and criminal records check is a condition of employment. Certain positions may also require a criminal history background check.
