About The Position

The General Manager exercises complete responsibility for developing and overseeing the region’s business operations that increases sales, profitability, market share, and customer and employee satisfaction.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous management experience required
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a general manager in a related industry
  • 1 year experience at Coburn’s preferred
  • OR a minimum of 5 years of progressive internal experience with Coburn’s preferred.
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to travel to Coburn’s customer and company branch locations.
  • Non-CDL Drivers: Drivers of vehicles that are transporting material intrastate, with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less are required to be a minimum age of 21 years old and licensed as follows: Texas- personal driver’s license with medical card. Mississippi & Tennessee –Class D license with medical card. Louisiana – Chauffer’s (Class D) license with medical card.
  • CDL Drivers: A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for drivers who operate vehicles that cross the state line (interstate) in a company-owned vehicle, or who operate vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more. CDL drivers must be a minimum age of 25 years old.
  • In order to operate a forklift, the operator must be a minimum age of 18 years old and successfully complete Coburn’s Forklift Operator Certification.
  • Must pass company required drug screen and physical.
  • This position requires background screening.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management and development of employee performance to ensure Coburn’s exceptional level of customer service is maintained while maximizing gross profit per Full Time Equivalent (FTE).
  • Review FTE report to ensure branch is reaching set productivity goals.
  • Assist Branch Managers with assessing the need for personnel, ensuring the appropriate people are selected for the right positions to promote and carry out Coburn’s exceptional level of customer service.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge about branch personnel through regular interaction and recognition of employee efforts.
  • Ensure that each Branch Manager understands the goals for each position, including how to accomplish overall responsibilities and daily tasks (through job descriptions and verbal instruction).
  • Ensure a professional image is displayed by the branch and each branch employee.
  • Coordinate with the Branch Manager to identify and develop high potential employees, including the identification of a career path for each of those employees that will benefit the employee and Coburn’s.
  • Create and implement succession planning for leadership positions within the region.
  • Maintain awareness of and utilize the available training (including Coburn University and onsite training) to support branch personnel.
  • Maintain an “open door” policy in order to be available to employees and managers for communication purposes.
  • Ensure consistent communication of company goals, policies and information.
  • Proactively meet with Branch Managers to provide direction and ensure smooth operations of each branch.
  • Oversee all branch employment actions including counseling, resolving conflict, recognizing, rewarding or terminating employees.
  • Document and review Branch Managers’ performance on an annual basis in order to meet and exceed company goals.
  • Coordinate with each Branch Manager to review employee pay on a regular basis or as needed and approve pay changes to ensure employees are adequately and appropriately compensated for work provided.
  • Follow and enforce all company policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the management of inventory to ensure alignment with sales, cash flow and financial goals while ensuring Coburn’s exceptional level of customer service.
  • Monitor Gross Margin Return on Investment (GMROI) for each branch (by using the Category Investment Report) and explain its importance in measuring profitability to the Branch Manager.
  • Create a monthly plan of action for each branch to reach the established GMROI goal.
  • Act as liaison between the branch and providers (i.e. service office, product managers, buyers, manufacturers, DC’s) to ensure branches have the right inventory at the right price at the right time.
  • Ensure that each branch is properly managing warranty, damaged and defective material, including monitoring total dollar volume of debit memos on a monthly basis.
  • Coordinate the selection of brands offered in each location to ensure that each branch is meeting its goals.
  • Ensure each branch is maintaining accurate inventory information, including all documents impacting inventory are handled properly & timely (i.e. sales orders, transfers, receiving, debits, credits, purchase orders, locations, etc.).
  • Monitor the annual inventory process.
  • The accounts receivable of each branch are managed within the established credit policy and aligned with collection and aging goals.
  • Coordinate with the Credit Manager and the Branch Manager to discuss information regarding an existing customer in order to appropriately determine a customer’s credit status and/or whether their credit limit should be adjusted.
  • Ensure that the Credit Manager has the correct information in order to make the best decision for the branch and customer, including closing customer accounts, reopening accounts and filing lawsuits and liens.
  • Ensure branches are reviewing credit on a monthly basis and participate as needed.
  • Utilize guidelines and policies when counseling with Branch Manager regarding credit.
  • Work with each branch manager to attain company goals on Accounts Receivable (aging) days.
  • Sales are maximized and market share is gained by setting goals, creating strategies, and determining appropriate product selection at each branch to meet the customer’s needs and company goals.
  • Participate in corporate strategic planning and implement strategic goals and objectives.
  • Develop, lead and direct strategies specific to each branch in the region in order to maximize sales and gain market share.
  • Monitor the changes in sales for each customer by reviewing reports (i.e. SA.10 and EPP.BRSGP) on a monthly basis to identify opportunities to increase sales with existing customers.
  • Monitor market activity to identify opportunities for growth including pursuing sales from upcoming developments and projects in the area, reviewing building permit reports, the success of bid attempts and monitoring competitor activity (products, customers, and projects).
  • Identify opportunities for a new branch location and oversee and coordinate the tasks needed to open the branch.
  • Build relationships with customers throughout the region.
  • Monitor customer satisfaction and customer retention.
  • Participate and encourage branch managers to be involved in the community and other public relations opportunities.
  • Participate in national associations and buying-group meetings.
  • Ensure the appropriate assignment of salespersons to each customer account in order to increase sales by providing the best match for the development of relationships and providing exceptional customer service.
  • Direct local marketing and focused sales efforts in order to create an awareness of Coburn’s and influence purchases for each branch.
  • Analyze the market of each branch to determine the customer needs and analyze which products to provide to meet those needs while maintaining the branch’s profitability goals.
  • Advise Executive Management and Product Managers on which product lines to support based on information from your market.
  • Facilitate communication between branches and Product Managers and buyers regarding conditions in your market.
  • The expenses of each branch are managed to achieve the profitability goals of the branch and company.
  • Review operating statements through GL Soft on a monthly basis with Branch Managers to ensure expenses are within profitability goals.
  • Anticipate and plan branch expenses (i.e. capital investments, promotions, etc.).
  • Ensure expenditures are within company policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and establish guidelines for expenditures for customer entertainment.
  • Investigate and follow up on expenses with the corporate office and with each Branch Manager, as needed.
  • Monitor and coordinate with branch manager to manage payroll expenses, especially overtime expenses.
  • Manage risk by overseeing the safety and security of personnel and assets, including equipment and inventory.
  • Knowledge is developed and maintained in order to increase credibility with employees and customers.
  • Enhance leadership ability through personal and professional skill development on an ongoing basis through training, reading, networking, etc.
  • Maintain awareness of company processes and procedures, and Coburn Computer System (CCS) to better assist with employee and customer needs.
  • Maintain awareness and understanding of market pricing and the cost of doing business in order to determine appropriate profit margin and spending.
  • Obtain information through participating in vendor training and researching products to have a general understanding of product lines.
  • Communicate with vendor and manufacturer representatives or Product Manager to learn about product changes, new items and changes in the industry.
  • Be aware of training in Coburn’s online learning management system (Coburn University).
  • Research upcoming trends in the market (i.e. green, new technology) by reading trade magazines and vendor literature to maintain awareness of the market, to better communicate with employees and customers, and relate to their needs.
  • Understand and practice a “teamwork” mentality by assisting the manager and other employees with any other duties or tasks, as needed or requested.
