About The Position

Under the general supervision of a Foreman or a higher-level officer, this is lead work in performing a variety of general maintenance work in multiple trades to ensure that buildings, facilities, and equipment are safe, functional, and compliant with regulations. An employee in this class performs a variety of general maintenance work in accordance with established schedules and special instructions. Provides guidance and instruction to maintenance staff and summer interns in performing a variety of general maintenance assignments and tasks across multiple trades. Work is performed in accordance with established schedules and special instructions and is reviewed for compliance with procedures and operating efficiency, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution and two (2) years performing semi-skilled labor, general building maintenance, mechanical repair, or trade helper related work.
  • OR Three (3) years of work experience as a General Maintenance Worker-I.
  • Knowledge of skilled building, grounds, and facility maintenance methods, including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, mechanical repair, and general construction practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety regulations, OSHA standards, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of power tools and equipment, including drills, circular saws, pressure washers, chainsaws, generators, and lawn/ground maintenance machinery.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures for buildings, mechanical systems, equipment, and tools.
  • Skill in diagnosing maintenance issues and determining appropriate corrective actions with minimal supervision.
  • Skill in performing semi-skilled to skilled repairs in carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanical systems, and ground maintenance.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting work orders, maintenance manuals, schematics, and basic blueprints.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, management, vendors, and outside personnel.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently, prioritize workload, and perform multiple assignments efficiently.
  • Ability to safely lift, move, and carry tools, materials, and equipment, often weighing up to 75 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Operates small electrical and gasoline-powered equipment for water pumping and temporary power, and drives light vehicles to transport supplies and personnel, ensuring safe setup, operation, and routine maintenance.
  • Conducts minor electrical maintenance such as replacing fuses and bulbs, installing temporary electrical extensions, and ensuring safety and code compliance.
  • Assists with the construction, repair, and maintenance of infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, parking lots, parks, fences, roofs, and public facilities by performing tasks such as patching roads, driveways, parking lots, and pathways; preparing simple, non-technical areas for painting by washing, scraping, and masking; and making minor building repairs including replacing screens, doors, shutters, and plumbing fixtures, constructing partitions, and repairing floors and steps.
  • Performs and guides minor equipment repairs, such as replacing or repairing belts and tightening nuts and bolts and promptly reports or seeks skilled help for major breakdowns or operating issues.
  • Ensures equipment is properly cleaned, lubricated, and supplied with water and fuel, and monitors performance and reports of deficiencies.
  • Performs large-scale grounds maintenance using push and riding mowers, weed eaters, and backpack blowers; apply landscaping techniques during projects; coordinate and participate in gardening tasks such as land clearing, terracing, planting, and harvesting while adhering to safety and sustainability best practices.
  • Performs custodial and general labor tasks within public facilities, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning restrooms, replenishing consumable supplies, and ensuring quality standards and efficient workflow.
  • Assists and works collaboratively with skilled trades personnel, including carpenters, painters, plumbers, and maintenance mechanics, performing advanced semi-skilled tasks.
  • Coordinates work activities with other departments, contractors, and vendors as needed.
  • Diagnoses maintenance issues and performs repairs in carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanical systems, and ground maintenance.
  • Operates, services, and performs preventive maintenance on power tools, equipment, and machinery; identify and reports major repair needs.
  • Loads, unloads, and transports heavy materials such as soil, sand, cement, and construction supplies.
  • Cleans, washes, waxes vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Reads and interprets work orders, diagrams, and basic construction drawings while enforcing safety procedures and ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during work activities.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment condition.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
