About The Position

The Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) position is a General Maintenance Electrician Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Sterling Correctional Facility. Primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing inmate workers in general maintenance and electrical skills and procedures; and ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant completion of assigned building and grounds maintenance tasks. The General Maintenance Electrician Supervisor promotes the CDOC Mission, Vision, and Values with integrity and commitment. This role involves hands-on instructional work alongside an inmate crew, focusing on facility electrical systems and electronic devices, as well as general building and grounds maintenance. The position also includes supervising inmate work crews, ensuring proper use of tools and equipment, and preparing inmates for community reentry.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance.
  • Two of the four years must include electrical work experience in residential and/or commercial buildings.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application.
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
  • Must be able to demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently.
  • Must be able to work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.
  • Must be able to deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner.
  • Must be able to work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders.
  • Must be able to communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required.

  • Ability to evaluate the condition of electrical fixtures/systems and safely and skillfully perform corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance.
  • Ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics, conduct relevant research, create material and labor list with cost estimate and implement projects from start to finish, while coordinating with other trades and shops to use resources efficiently.
  • Willingness and ability to effectively communicate while working with inmates individually and in groups, providing verbal and/or written instructions, monitoring project progress and compliance, in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines and mandatory reporting and record-keeping regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff and inmates and inspire teamwork.
  • Ability to effectively respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires, medical emergencies and escapes).
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs, work in high, tight and confined spaces; outside during inclement weather and in close proximity to industrial equipment.
  • Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations.
  • Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift.
  • Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high-stakes interaction.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff, and inmates.
  • Training and overseeing inmate workers in general maintenance and electrical skills and procedures.

  • Ensuring the safe, secure, efficient, compliant, and cost-effective execution of assigned tasks and projects by performing 'hands-on' instructional work alongside inmate crew.
  • Maintaining facility electrical systems and electronic devices.
  • Maintaining facility buildings, including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, remodeling, and repairs.
  • Providing instruction and training to inmates in modifying and remodeling prison buildings.
  • Providing training in the design, installation, repair, and maintenance of all facility structures.
  • Training inmate workers in the proper use, care, and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals, and machinery.
  • Evaluating the condition of electrical fixtures/systems and performing corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance.
  • Ensuring assigned work is performed in compliance with agency regulations, policy, and applicable guidelines and codes.
  • Maintaining facility grounds, including design, installation, and daily maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Providing instruction and training to inmates in all aspects of grounds maintenance and the proper use, care, and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals, and machinery.
  • Performing snow removal throughout the complex.
  • Coordinating with other projects, supervisors, and managers to facilitate economical use of resources.
  • Assisting other physical plant staff with duties as assigned.
  • Maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and materials for daily and emergent needs.
  • Monitoring inventory levels and implementing procedures for efficient use and elimination of theft, waste, and loss.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing electrical devices based on information received from staff.
  • Providing supervision of assigned inmate work crew.
  • Promoting a high level of performance by setting work standards according to agency mission and vision.
  • Training and instructing staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment, and procedures.
