About The Position

SA Recycling is one of the largest scrap metal recyclers in the United States and is experiencing significant growth. We are looking for a General Laborer to join our expanding operations. This role involves various tasks assigned by management, including general housekeeping, inspecting metal processing, upgrading materials, and assisting technical workers. The ideal candidate will be eager to learn new skills, progress to more technical tasks, and work independently over time. The work environment is an outdoor scrap metal yard.

Requirements

• Must pass a medical physical and drug test
• Must pass a background check
• Ability to communicate effectively with others
• Ability to understand direction (written or oral)
• Ability to use basic math skills as the job demands
• Willingness to learn how to sort metal, identify colors, shapes, and weights
• Willingness to learn how to properly maintain equipment
• Willingness to learn how to properly utilize PPE
• Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, & SA Recycling safety, health, & environmental rules, regulations, policies, & procedures
• All US applicants must be 18 years of age or older

Nice To Haves

• Employees in this position prior to April 2014 are presumed to be qualified and are "grandfathered" into their positions.
• Preferred – high school diploma or GED and/or foreign education acceptable
• Bi-lingual (English & Spanish) language skills a plus

Responsibilities

• Unloading pallets, boxes, and bundles
• Material handling/sorting: pushing, pulling, picking, lifting, carrying, and filling hoppers, boxes, and conveyor belts
• Unpacking boxes using box cutters, separating plastics, zip ties, blister packs, and other packaging materials
• Disassembling small equipment, cutting wires, torquing pipe fittings, removing bolts, automobile parts, and appliance parts
• Working with recycling equipment for processing metal product (e.g., metal shears, band saw, wire strippers)
• Directing traffic of yard vehicles
• Light facility maintenance: painting, scraping, moving furniture and equipment
• Machinery maintenance: selecting and using tools properly, pulling and installing parts for machinery, working with other employees to assist machinery repair
• Housekeeping: sweeping, cleaning, shoveling, and debris collection
• Moderate and periodic landscaping work
• Cleaning up work area at the end of shift
• Keeping work areas neat and orderly
• Organizing materials for effective use of space
• Disposing of various waste materials appropriately
• Inspection to ensure cleanup is completed
• Maintaining effective housekeeping in the workplace for safety and hygiene
