About The Position

The General Helper performs a variety of technical operations in support of the machine shop and CNC Machinists, working under general supervision. The role is based in Newton, New Jersey, though duties at other Thorlabs locations may occasionally be required. The scheduled hours are 5:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. The position supports shop operations through general maintenance, material handling, production work on manual and CNC equipment, deburring, laser engraving, and finishing tasks. It also requires maintaining a clean and orderly work area, following safety requirements, and meeting ongoing company standards for work quality, quantity, and conduct. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

At least one year of experience in a maintenance shop or manufacturing environment.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Strong ethical conduct.
Ability to take initiative and ownership.
Ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
Ability to shift between tasks as production priorities change.
Ability to solve practical problems in situations with limited standardization.
Ability to interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule-based instructions.
Ability to stand or sit for extended durations and perform repetitive work at times.
Ability to lift or move objects up to 20 pounds.
Ability to grasp, manipulate, or assemble small parts and components.
Ability to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment, including masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments.

Responsibilities

Perform general maintenance, including sweeping, mopping, and emptying trash cans.
Unload trucks efficiently, cut stock, and deliver material to specific machines.
Machine parts on manual equipment with guidance from the set-up crew.
Run production parts on CNC machines.
Deburr parts and operate a laser engraver.
Finish parts by tumbling machined parts, polishing extrusions, and bead blasting.
Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
Meet company standards for the quantity and quality of work and follow company policies, procedures, and workplace behavior directives.
Perform other duties as assigned.
