About The Position

This role involves performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. The General Cleaner will also undertake other related tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate for the performance of assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling 5-35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Good eyesight, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination, for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • High Dusting: Using a treated high duster, clean surfaces above shoulder height in a counter-clockwise direction (e.g., lights above doors, curtain tips, vents, ledges).
  • Sanitizing / Spot Cleaning: Using a germicidal solution, sanitize surfaces below shoulder height (e.g., ledges, chairs, telephone, countertops, trashcans). Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs, walls, and spot clean windows.
  • Bathroom Cleaning: Clean and sanitize sinks, toilets (including the inside with a Johnnie Mop), and check/refill soap and paper dispensers.
  • Empty Trash Cans: Remove liners, clean cans if necessary, and replace liners.
  • Floor Dusting or Vacuuming: Dust mop floors using an “S” stroke, ensuring all areas under furniture and in restrooms are covered. Clean mop heads and dispose of dust. When vacuuming, start at the back of the room and work towards the door, covering all areas under furniture.
  • Grounds care: Clean outside areas including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks, flower beds, and curb lines for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, wiping lower window ledges, high dusting for dust and cobwebs, cleaning public area glass, and policing the parking lot for trash.
  • Public Common Areas: Dust mop and spot mop main hallways, clean glass, clean planters, check for cobwebs and perform high dusting of window areas at least twice a week, and check corners and edges for debris.
  • Food Court: Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables. Place chairs back under tables. Spot clean spills, empty and clean trash cans, remove dirty trays to the washroom for cleaning, and police outside eating areas.
  • Floor Sanitizing: Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting at the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
  • Inspection: Mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement after completing a room, making corrections as needed.
  • Daily Tasks: Hallways, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, wall spotting, and high dusting are to be done daily.
  • Customer Relations and Service: Knock before entering occupied rooms, be friendly and courteous, answer questions helpfully or refer to someone who can, report broken items, work quietly, stay in the assigned work area, maintain a neat appearance, and report to the supervisor if work is not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care (stripping, waxing, auto scrubbing, buffing) and carpet care (extraction, bonneting).
