About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires excellent customer relations and service, ensuring a positive experience for building occupants and visitors.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of janitorial work operations.
Basic knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
Basic knowledge of safe work practices.
Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Maintain physical condition appropriate for the performance of assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
Adequate sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination for cleaning tasks and safe operation of equipment.

Experience with floor care – stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrub and buffing of floors.

Responsibilities

Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, working in a counter-clockwise direction around the room, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, removing fingerprints and smudges from various surfaces and spot cleaning windows.
Clean bathrooms thoroughly, including sinks, toilets (using a Johnnie Mop and germicidal solution), and dispensers, refilling as needed.
Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
Dust or vacuum floors using a treated dust mophead or vacuum cleaner, working from the back of the room towards the door, ensuring all areas are covered.
Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing the parking lot.
Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping main hallways, cleaning glass, cleaning planters, and checking for cobwebs.
Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, placing chairs back under tables, spot cleaning spills, and cleaning trash cans.
Process dirty trays in the washroom using a tray power washer and stack clean trays for recycled use.
Police outside eating areas in the food court.
Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting at the back of the room and working towards the exit.
Conduct self-inspections after completing cleaning tasks, reviewing steps and visually checking furniture placement for corrections.
Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, along with high dusting.
Engage in customer relations and service by knocking before entering occupied rooms, being friendly and cheerful, answering questions courteously, reporting issues to the supervisor, working quietly, and maintaining a clean personal appearance.
Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor or Account Manager, which may include floor care (stripping, waxing, extraction, bonneting), auto scrubbing, and buffing floors.
