About The Position

The General Cleaner performs a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping them in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role also involves performing other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient ability to communicate with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling with 5-35 lbs force, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Requires depth perception, hand-eye coordination in operation of equipment and tool use.
  • Requires sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • High Dusting: Using a treated high duster, clean surfaces above shoulder height in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Sanitizing / Spot Cleaning: Using a germicidal solution, sanitize surfaces below shoulder height and remove fingerprints and smudges from surfaces. Spot clean windows.
  • Bathroom Cleaning: Clean and sanitize sinks, toilets, and surrounding areas using germicidal solutions. Check and refill soap and paper dispensers.
  • Empty Trash Cans: Remove liners, clean cans if necessary, and replace with clean liners.
  • Floor Dusting or Vacuuming: Dust mop or vacuum floors, including under furniture, using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Grounds care: Clean outside areas including emptying ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing the parking lot.
  • Public Common Areas: Dust mop and spot mop main hallways, clean glass, clean planters, and perform high dusting for dust and cobwebs.
  • Food Court: Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables. Spot clean spills, empty trash cans, remove dirty trays to the washroom for cleaning, and police outside eating areas.
  • Floor Sanitizing: Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, working from the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
  • Your Inspection: Mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement after completing a room, making corrections as needed.
  • Daily tasks: Hall, lobby, stairs, water fountains, furniture, wall spotting, and high dusting are performed daily.
  • Customer Relations and Service: Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answer questions, report issues to the supervisor, work quietly, stay in the assigned area, and maintain a clean personal appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by supervisor and/or Account Manager, which may include floor care such as stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrubbing, and buffing of floors.
