About The Position

To perform a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping them in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition, and to perform other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate sufficiently with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling 5-35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Sufficient sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, working in a counter-clockwise direction around the room, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height such as lights, vents, and ledges.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
  • Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls, and spot clean windows using the proper solution.
  • Clean bathrooms using a germicidal solution, including sinks, toilet seats, the outside of toilet bowls, and the inside of toilet bowls using a Johnnie Mop. Check and refill soap and paper dispensers daily.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and wiping down cans if liquid is present.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors, starting at the back of the room and working towards the door, ensuring all areas under furniture are cleaned. Clean mop heads and dispose of dust.
  • Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks, flower beds, and curb lines for trash, spot cleaning sidewalks, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, wiping lower window ledges, high dusting for dust and cobwebs, cleaning public area glass, and policing the parking lot for trash.
  • Dust mop and spot mop main hallways, clean glass, clean planters inside and out, and perform high dusting for dust and cobwebs in window areas at least twice a week, checking all corners and edges for debris.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, spot clean spills, empty and clean trash cans, remove dirty trays to the washroom for cleaning, and police outside eating areas.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting at the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
  • Mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement after completing a room, making corrections as needed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, as well as high dusting.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to someone who can assist.
  • Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor, which may include floor care tasks like stripping and waxing floors, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto scrubbing and buffing floors.
