About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks in various areas, including common spaces, restrooms, and food courts, as well as grounds care. The position also requires good customer relations and adherence to safety standards.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate for the performance of assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling 5-35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Sufficient sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, remove fingerprints and smudges, and spot clean windows using appropriate germicidal solutions.
  • Clean bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, using germicidal solutions and specialized tools.
  • Empty and clean trash cans, replacing liners as needed, and handling cans with liquid appropriately.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors using the "S" stroke method, ensuring all areas under furniture and in restrooms are cleaned.
  • Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and parking lots for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and high dusting window ledges.
  • Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping main hallways, cleaning glass, planters, and performing high dusting of window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, place chairs back, spot clean spills, and clean trash cans.
  • Remove accumulated dirty trays to the washroom, clean them using a tray power washer, and stack clean trays.
  • Police outside eating areas in the food court.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting from the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
  • Conduct self-inspections after completing cleaning tasks, reviewing steps, and checking furniture placement for corrections.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, along with high dusting.
  • Maintain positive customer relations by being friendly, courteous, and helpful, answering questions, and reporting any issues to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and stay within the assigned work area unless directed otherwise.
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care tasks such as stripping and waxing floors, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto scrubbing and buffing floors.
