About The Position

The General Assembly Manufacturing Engineering Group Manager (EGM) leads Compartment Manufacturing Engineers (CMEs) responsible for product manufacturability, assembly strategies, and program readiness. The team co-develops GM’s next-generation electric, hybrid, autonomous, and semi-autonomous vehicles and represents manufacturing requirements in product design and cross-functional decisions. In a centralized Product Interface role, the EGM translates manufacturing and business strategies into team objectives, operating plans, and engineering priorities. The manager exercises independent judgment on technical decisions, guides the team through complex problems, and engages subject-matter experts to develop practical solutions. The EGM leads manufacturing integration for an assigned SMT area and partners with Product Engineering, packaging, vehicle design, automation, tooling, execution, plant launch, and program management. The role aligns stakeholders on product and process trade-offs, resolves competing requirements, and supports global collaboration, including indirect support for China, Korea, and South America. The EGM is accountable for technical deliverables and represents assembly plants and plant operators, setting direction, delegating ownership, removing barriers, and developing CME capabilities for safe, efficient assembly and successful vehicle launches.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of manufacturing and/or manufacturing engineering experience in program execution or an assembly plant.
  • Experience supporting multiple vehicle launches.
  • Advanced knowledge and broad experience in General Assembly manufacturing engineering, including integrating requirements across disciplines and engaging specialized experts when needed.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including guiding teams through complex, non-standard problems, evaluating alternatives, and implementing short- and long-term countermeasures.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presenting technical findings, risks, and strategies at all organizational levels and influencing product design decisions to support assembly plant needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams and multiple complex projects, translate business strategies into operating plans, establish priorities, and exercise independent judgment with accountability for results.
  • Initiative to improve outcomes, resolve competing cross-functional requirements, and support broader manufacturing objectives beyond assigned responsibilities.
  • Project management skills, including setting deliverables, managing risks and dependencies, and developing these capabilities in others.
  • Ability to coach and develop direct reports, provide actionable feedback, build team capability through development planning, and delegate appropriately.
  • Experience leading change, improving processes, and implementing GMS principles.
  • Knowledge of General Assembly processes and GM systems, including VAA, MRs, Auros, E2, Stature, GLP, GVDP, PRTS, and the DFMEA–PFMEA process.
  • Automotive benchmarking skills using A2MAC and other resources to identify manufacturing improvement opportunities and compare proposed GM designs with global competitors.
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle regularly and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review.
  • No GM immigration-related sponsorship is available for this role; applicants must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in new architecture development.
  • Deep working knowledge of vehicle system manufacturing requirements, strategies, standardized work, and processes.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing plant-floor and product design improvements for manufacturing.
  • Experience across multiple manufacturing engineering assignments, delivering successful individual or team outcomes.
  • Experience collaborating with colleagues in other regions to deliver global programs or projects.
  • Experience leading or training others in GMS and four-walls application within a site or program.
  • 2–3 years of experience in plant assignments.
  • Demonstrated domestic or international mobility.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Advanced degree in engineering or business.
  • Cross-functional assignment experience in another ME Center, such as Body, Paint, or MEI.

Responsibilities

  • Set team priorities for product manufacturability and assembly strategy; influence Product Engineering to deliver buildable products, reduce BEC, and support program MCPU targets through integrated part design, Design for Assembly, and part elimination.
  • Lead design-for-automation strategy with automation teams, suppliers, Product Engineering, and technical specialists; establish ownership for ideation, product enablers, business-case development, and implementation readiness; promote knowledge sharing across programs.
  • Direct development and review of vehicle build Sequences of Operations using BOE and BOP Level 1 as guiding templates; resolve product, tooling, and process trade-offs and minimize assembly plant changes where feasible.
  • Champion operator safety and efficient assembly by ensuring build-related human-factor and ergonomic risks are identified, coordinating with the ergonomics team, and driving issues to resolution.
  • Establish ownership, timing, and technical review expectations for PFMEAs, Lessons Learned, Advanced Program Health Checks, and Investment Assumptions; ensure deliverables inform program decisions and risks and open actions are addressed.
  • Ensure the team supports RPLS mitigation and coordinates timely technical action with stakeholders to improve vehicle safety.
  • Guide CMEs in scoping complex problems, analyzing root causes, and developing short- and long-term countermeasures; exercise independent technical judgment, engage subject-matter experts, and ensure leadership reviews present evidence, alternatives, risks, and recommendations.
  • Develop CMEs through assignments, coaching, technical training, and development plans aligned with applicable ME and CME leveling guides; delegate decisions appropriately and strengthen independent problem solving, cross-functional influence, and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, diverse, and harassment-free work environment; model integrity and encourage employees to raise concerns and respectfully challenge decisions.
  • Foster employee engagement, open communication, and constructive feedback; build relationships across Product Engineering, manufacturing execution, plant launch, and program management to strengthen ownership and timely issue resolution.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship without replacing CME ownership; guide experienced engineers in resolving non-standard problems and serving as technical resources for less experienced colleagues.
  • Manage day-to-day team activities by setting objectives, prioritizing assignments, reviewing results, coaching performance, and developing team members; adjust workload and resources to program needs and escalate unresolved constraints with recommendations.
  • Drive continuous improvement and digitization of CME work by establishing practical processes that improve engineering efficiency, share lessons across programs, and support manufacturing and company strategies.

Benefits
