About The Position

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan that believes education is key to creating economic and civic opportunities. ESH’s Adult & Workforce Development Programs align with this mission by providing high-quality programs and services. Reporting to the Adult Literacy Education Manager, the GED Instructor is responsible for organizing, scheduling, and instructing participants in Adult Basic Skills, including GED preparation, job readiness PSP Academy, and sector-based trainings to certify participants. The GED Instructor will provide high-quality instruction, assess participant learning needs, track academic progress, support credential attainment, and foster participant engagement to promote educational and workforce success. As a member of the PSP Programs, the GED Instructor is expected to maintain a participant-centered approach, collaborate effectively with colleagues and community partners, uphold program compliance and documentation requirements, and contribute to the achievement of program goals and performance outcomes. This position does not have any direct reports and interacts with other internal programs within East Side House such as (but not limited to) Jobs Plus and externally within the community. With a focus on adult literacy, high school equivalency attainment, workforce readiness, and career pathway advancement, the GED Instructor provides educational instruction, academic coaching, career readiness support, and referral services that lead to improved literacy skills, GED completion, industry-recognized certifications, employment readiness, post-secondary transition opportunities, and positive participant outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Strong computer skills and technological experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Teams, etc.) Google Suite (Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets) and similar programs

  • Knowledge of job retention and career advancement services.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with peers and strong communication skills.

  • Employees must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate GED services into broader career and educational goals of students.
  • Implement and expand on GED material for pre-HSE and HSE prep, incorporating students’ relevant interests and learning needs.
  • Conduct needs assessment analysis for each participant; provide student feedback and support; devise individualized instructional plans for students.
  • Prescribes from individual employability plans and contributes to monthly evaluations of progress in program, makes recommendations and/or adaptation for program adjustment.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing management to assist members achieve career and education goals.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis; Maintain records portfolios and student progress reports.
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team, providing onsite services.
  • Coordinate program activities with other program and overall departmental staff to promote the most effective instructional program goals.
  • Be willing to become licensed in area of certification as required by program and lead trainings to certify participants.
  • Participate in collaborative efforts towards achieving goals as set forth in the Years 1-3 Performance-Based Milestones Chart (subject to change).
  • Participate in relevant departmental meetings, trainings, case conferences, workshops and events.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
