About The Position

Performs complex technical work fabricating and welding natural gas facilities and appurtenances. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Gas System Manager. The role includes shop and field welding, maintaining tap equipment, and helping ensure the safe installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities. Duties also include designing and fabricating meter sets, assisting with gas system repairs, maintaining the welding shop, and responding to customer service needs and emergencies. This is medium work requiring occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds, frequent exertion of up to 20 pounds, and constant exertion of up to 10 pounds to move objects. The work requires kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping, as well as spoken communication, hearing, and visual acuity for measuring, fabrication, and machine operation. Work may take place indoors and outdoors and involve extreme cold or heat, noise, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Requirements

Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in arc welding utility pipelines.
Possess, or be able to obtain within six months of employment, a Class A commercial driver's license valid in North Carolina.
Ability to pass the American Petroleum Institute (API) 1104 welding qualification test.
Possess, or be able to obtain within one year of employment, CPR and basic first aid certification.
Thorough knowledge of methods used in welding, cutting, brazing, and heating pipe and related fittings.
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and trade safety precautions.
Thorough knowledge of plastic fusion.
General knowledge of standard office equipment and associated software.
General knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment used to install, replace, maintain, and repair natural gas lines.
General knowledge of maintenance and manual methods and tasks involved in installation, maintenance, repair, location, and replacement of gas lines and appurtenances.
General knowledge of city engineering standards and specifications related to gas system installation methods and materials.
Skill in arc welding.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
Thoroughness and dependability.
Ability to read utility maps to determine gas pipeline locations.
Ability to read printed locate-ticket directions and perform requested tasks.
Ability to read operation and service manuals and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, and the general public.

Responsibilities

Perform welding in the shop and in the field.
Maintain tap equipment and help ensure the safe installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities and appurtenances.
Design and fabricate meter sets.
Assist with natural gas system repairs.
Fabricate commercial and industrial meter sets and regulator stations, and perform installations.
Weld steel main and service lines, including removing, replacing, relocating, and abandoning lines; perform and oversee tapping and stopping gas flow.
Perform welding activities for new steel pipe service lines and steel tapping tees.
Repair leaking natural gas mains and services through welding.
Gather measurement data for as-built drawings.
Repair damaged equipment and fabricate replacement and necessary parts for division equipment.
Manage the welding shop and maintain welding equipment, supplies, and materials.
Perform small welding projects as assigned.
Provide customer service and emergency response as needed.
Complete work orders and connect and disconnect gas service.
Perform on-call duties and work outside normal hours in emergencies as required.
Perform related tasks as required.
