About The Position

The Gallery Monitor is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the Museum’s visitors, staff, artwork, and facilities. The Gallery Monitor maintains a welcoming environment while upholding Museum policies, monitoring galleries and public spaces, and responding to incidents professionally and efficiently. Gallery Monitors may act as the contact at the Museum’s Security Desk, and may also be assigned duty during private events that occur outside regular public hours. This role requires availability for work on both weekdays and weekends, and may require hours before or after regular Museum hours to cover activities and events taking place at the Museum.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Certifications in CPR and first aid are preferred.
  • Good verbal communication skills in English to speak to visitors and be understood.
  • Tactful and polite in dealing with the public.
  • Presentable at all times through proper grooming and personal hygiene; follows the Personal Appearance Policy for the Security Department.
  • Observant in order to detect and report unusual behavior or circumstances.
  • Alert and able to respond quickly in an emergency.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Expect Night, Morning, Weekday, Weekend, and Evening shifts.
  • Demonstrate the initiative to learn and enhance skills that promote anti-racism, cultural competency, and an understanding of oppression and its impact.
  • Participate in intentional learning efforts, including events relating to understanding institutional racism and building cultural competency
  • Must be able to move throughout the museum for extended periods of time, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 lbs. (must be able to lift a fire extinguisher or small child).
  • Days and hours of work may include work on weekends, holidays and some evenings.
  • No use of cell phones while on duty, except for emergency situations
  • Welcome guests (say hello!) and be prepared to answer questions about exhibitions and installations
  • Maintain alertness and attentiveness in all public areas of the Museum, limiting interactions with other staff to brief conversations while on duty.
  • Regularly move through the galleries and other assigned spaces to observe the conditions of the spaces and guest behavior
  • Maintain knowledge of and capability to perform opening and closing procedures even if not regularly scheduled for those duties
  • Adhere to the Personal Appearance Policy while on duty
  • Enforce Museum policies and procedures in Museum public spaces (including the garage, plazas and other outdoor areas)
  • Assist other Museum staff as requested by a manager; notify the Security Supervisor if the request will take you away from your assigned duties for any significant length of time

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in CPR and first aid are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a courteous and visible security presence throughout Museum galleries, public spaces, entrances, and event areas
  • Actively welcome visitors and assist visitors with directions, general inquiries, and museum guidelines
  • Respond to alarms, medical emergencies, and other incidents following Museum procedures and guidelines; control the scene / situation until relieved by an appropriate manager
  • Monitor exhibitions, installations, and other areas of the Museum to prevent damage, unauthorized conduct or unsafe behavior
  • Conduct regular patrols of galleries, storage rooms, exterior grounds, and restricted areas
  • Enforce Museum policies, including bag restrictions, photography rules, and prohibited items, among others
  • Operate CCTV systems, access control panels, and alarm monitoring equipment as assigned
  • Complete detailed incident reports, daily activity logs, and documentation for security events
  • Notify the Security Supervisor of irregularities, maintenance issues, or risks to safety and property
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for Museum building and galleries, as assigned
  • Support evening programs, special events and tours
  • Secure doors, gates, bollards, loading zones and sensitive areas
  • Additional duties as assigned in support of the Museum
