About The Position

The American Museum of Asmat Art (AMAA) is seeking Gallery Attendants for the 2026-2027 academic year. This position involves ensuring the safety of the museum's collection, managing visitor count, and assisting visitors. Attendants will also support other AMAA projects and follow established procedures for opening, closing, and emergency situations. This role requires punctuality, dependability, and an interest in art and diverse cultures.

Requirements

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate or doctoral levels.
  • Students must be actively enrolled at least part-time in courses for credit.

Nice To Haves

  • Course experience in Art History and Visual Culture or Museum Studies.
  • Knowledge of Pacific and/or Asmat art.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts and work the entirety of their shifts.
  • Ensure the safety of the AMAA collection and other exhibition materials.
  • Follow correct procedures for opening and closing the museum.
  • Count and record the number of visitors during each shift.
  • Direct visitors to information guides, web resources, and contact information for museum staff.
  • Assist with other AMAA projects that can be carried out at the attendant desk.
  • Follow emergency procedures if needed.
  • Notify the director and, when possible, find another attendant to cover shifts if unable to work.
  • Report museum concerns to the director of the AMAA.

Benefits

  • Paid at the rate of $16.50/hour.
