About The Position

Catholic Charities is seeking an intern to join their Foundation Relations team, which raises approximately $4 million annually through grant proposals to private foundations. This role is designed for individuals who want to learn the craft of grant writing, focusing on clear prose, careful research, and tailoring proposals to specific funders. The intern will review and refine proposal drafts, fact-check information against source materials, and ensure accuracy and quality in all submitted proposals. A significant part of the role involves reviewing AI-generated drafts, providing critical feedback, and learning to integrate AI tools into a professional writing workflow. The position offers opportunities for growth, starting with review and onboarding, and progressing to more substantive contributions in drafting, research, and process improvement for interns who demonstrate strong performance. The internship provides hands-on experience in professional writing, editing, and understanding the grant funding process.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in English, political science, public policy, communications, journalism, history, sociology, or another liberal arts or social sciences field.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Strong writing and editing skills; ability to articulate why a piece of writing is effective or ineffective.
  • Detail orientation; ability to catch errors others miss.
  • Comfortable asking questions when something seems unclear.
  • Openness to working with AI tools as part of the role (no prior experience required).
  • Coursework in research, professional writing, or related areas.
  • Familiarity with the nonprofit sector.
  • Successful applicant must comply with federal contractor vaccine mandate requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Review proposal drafts against funder requirements and internal quality checklists.
  • Fact-check statistics, dollar figures, dates, partners, and other specifics against source documents.
  • Flag writing that does not align with the agency's voice or that misses the funder's specific interests.
  • Help maintain documentation of agency programs, voice, and funder relationships.
  • Contribute to drafting proposal sections as context is built.
  • Assist with prospect research on family foundations and other funding sources.
