About The Position

The Department of Philosophy and Political Science in the College of Arts & Sciences at Quinnipiac University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The preferred start date is August 2027. We seek a dynamic and collaborative teacher-scholar committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarly engagement. The successful candidate will teach core Philosophy courses and contribute to the continued development of innovative offerings that serve students across a range of academic disciplines, particularly in areas of sustained and growing demand such as ethics, artificial intelligence, bioethics, environmental ethics, human rights, criminal justice and law. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued evolution of Philosophy's curricular offerings and its interdisciplinary support of programs across the University. We seek a colleague who will help refresh and modernize the curriculum through innovative teaching and course development in areas of emerging importance and student demand. Philosophy plays an important role in undergraduate instruction and interdisciplinary support across the University. The Philosophy program currently offers 20 courses that serve the general education curriculum, enrolling over 400 students annually in core introductory courses: Introduction to Philosophy, ethics, and logic. These enrollments reflect sustained student demand. Philosophy also provides essential coursework supporting numerous programs, including Nursing and Health Sciences (Bioethics), Environmental Studies (Environmental Ethics), Political Science (Human Rights; War and Peace), Computer Science (Ethics and AI), Sports Studies (Philosophy of Sport), History, and Women’s and Gender Studies (Philosophy of Feminism). We also support the university honors program and offer courses that provide University Certificates. The department supports a Philosophy minor and a Certificate in 21st‑Century Ethical Problems, both of which attract students from a wide range of majors. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary education, experiential learning, and community engagement, preparing students for future success in their lives and careers.

Requirements

  • PhD in Philosophy or a related field by the time of appointment, with demonstrated academic preparation and teaching competence in Philosophy. ABD candidates who expect to complete their degree before the start date are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish research in the discipline and engage in public scholarship where appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses to meet departmental and programmatic needs (e.g. Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Ethics, Environmental Philosophy, History of Western Philosophy). The standard teaching load for research-active tenure-track faculty is 3 courses (9 credits) per semester.
  • Integrate engaging, inclusive, and innovative pedagogies and experiences to enhance student learning and engagement
  • Maintain an active research program that will engage students and lead to scholarly presentations and publications
  • Demonstrate a willingness to communicate information about their area of expertise on campus and in the wider community
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students and philosophy-related student organizations and activities
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive community in which everyone belongs
  • Engage in appropriate departmental, college, university, professional, and/or public service as relevant to the position
