About The Position
As a Full-stack Engineer on Capital One’s Digital Commerce & Innovation team, you will build mission-critical spend experiences that support major revenue streams and help customers manage their finances. The team develops reliable software, including smart merchant updates and card-on-file management, to reduce payment friction and keep transactions running during critical account updates. You will work with high autonomy and help shape technical direction across a modern stack centered on Python, Java, and AWS serverless technologies. You will lead technology projects and provide technical direction across Agile teams, collaborating with developers, product managers, and architects. The role includes building cloud-based solutions, setting standards for design and operational excellence, improving system performance, reducing technical debt, and influencing long-term technology strategy in a “you build it, you own it” environment.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, such as Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
- At least 4 years of software engineering experience; internship experience does not apply.
- At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
Nice To Haves
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- 7+ years of coding experience with more than two of the following: Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, or Scala.
- 3+ years of experience with databases and database management systems.
- 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
- 4+ years of experience contributing to open-source frameworks.
- 3+ years of experience with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
- 4+ years of experience creating synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
- 3+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing frameworks.
- 3+ years of experience using Git-based version-control systems such as Git, GitHub, or Bitbucket.
- 3+ years of experience troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
- Experience using modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
- 1+ year of experience mentoring engineers and supporting professional development in technical teams.
- 1+ year of experience using observability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
- Experience with interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity beyond basic code completion.
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
- Experience establishing and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead a portfolio of technology projects and a team of developers working on distributed microservices and full-stack systems that address company regulatory needs.
- Stay current with technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in technology communities, and mentor members of the engineering community.
- Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver cloud-based solutions and customer experiences.
- Use programming languages, databases, container orchestration services, and AWS tools and services to build software.
- Provide technical leadership and direction across Agile teams, setting standards for design, development, and operational excellence.
- Partner with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks.
- Identify areas for improvement, implement targeted refactoring, and help reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
- Evaluate emerging tools and practices and influence long-term technology strategy in a “you build it, you own it” environment.
