About The Position
Capital One is seeking a Full-stack Engineer to help drive a major technology transformation by building cloud-based solutions and addressing complex business and regulatory needs. The role leads technology projects and developers working with distributed microservices and full-stack systems, while collaborating with digital product managers and architects to deliver robust customer experiences. It provides technical leadership across Agile teams, establishes standards for design, development, and operational excellence, and contributes to long-term technology strategy in a “you build it, you own it” environment. The engineer also evaluates emerging tools, supports technology communities, mentors engineers, and improves system performance through targeted refactoring and technical-debt reduction. The role uses programming languages and technologies including Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, open-source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS services. It is designated hybrid, requiring adherence to Capital One’s policy for on-site presence at the employee’s designated office location. The stated salary range for McLean, Virginia is $197,300–$225,100 annually. The position is eligible for performance-based incentives, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, such as Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
- At least 4 years of software engineering experience; internship experience does not apply.
- At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
Nice To Haves
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- 7+ years of coding experience with more than two of the following: Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, or Scala.
- 3+ years of experience with databases and database management systems.
- 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
- 4+ years of experience contributing to open-source frameworks.
- 3+ years of experience with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
- 4+ years of experience creating synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
- 3+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing frameworks.
- 3+ years of experience using Git-based version-control systems such as Git, GitHub, or Bitbucket.
- 3+ years of experience troubleshooting technical issues within cloud environments.
- Experience leveraging modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
- At least 1 year of experience mentoring engineers and driving professional development within technical teams.
- At least 1 year of experience using observability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
- Experience with interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity using capabilities beyond basic code completion.
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
- Experience establishing and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead a portfolio of technology projects and a team of developers working with distributed microservices and full-stack systems to address company regulatory needs.
- Stay current with technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in internal and external technology communities, and mentor members of the engineering community.
- Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions and customer experiences.
- Use programming languages, databases, container orchestration services, and AWS tools and services to build solutions.
- Provide technical leadership and direction across Agile teams, setting standards for design, development, and operational excellence.
- Partner with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks.
- Identify improvement opportunities, implement targeted refactoring, and contribute to reducing technical debt and improving system performance.
- Influence long-term technology strategy by evaluating emerging tools and practices in a “you build it, you own it” environment.
