About The Position

Capital One is seeking a Full-stack Software Engineer to help drive a major technology transformation. The role leads diverse technology projects and developers who build distributed microservices and full-stack systems to meet regulatory needs. It provides technical leadership across Agile teams and partners with digital product managers and architects to deliver robust cloud-based solutions and define service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks.

The engineer works in a collaborative, iterative, “you build it, you own it” environment, applying modern programming languages, open-source frameworks, databases, container orchestration, and AWS services. The role also promotes technical learning and mentoring, improves design and operational practices, reduces technical debt, enhances system performance, and helps shape long-term technology strategy through evaluation of emerging tools and practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field such as Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
• At least 4 years of software engineering experience; internship experience does not apply.
• At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 7 or more years of coding experience with more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, or Scala.
• 3 or more years of experience with databases and database management systems.
• 3 or more years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• 4 or more years of experience contributing to open-source frameworks.
• 3 or more years of experience with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• 4 or more years of experience creating synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• 3 or more years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and automated testing frameworks.
• 3 or more years of experience using Git-based version-control systems such as Git, GitHub, or Bitbucket.
• 3 or more years of experience troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Experience using modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• 1 or more years of experience mentoring engineers and supporting professional development within technical teams.
• 1 or more years of experience using observability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Experience using interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity beyond basic code completion.
• Experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
• Experience establishing and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead a portfolio of technology projects and a team of developers building distributed microservices and full-stack systems to address regulatory needs.
• Promote learning about technology trends, experimentation with new technologies, participation in technology communities, and mentoring of engineering colleagues.
• Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver cloud-based solutions and customer experiences.
• Use programming languages, databases, container orchestration services, and AWS tools and services to develop solutions.
• Provide technical leadership and direction across Agile teams, establishing standards for design, development, and operational excellence.
• Partner with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns, and reusable frameworks.
• Identify improvement opportunities, implement targeted refactoring, and contribute to reducing technical debt and improving system performance.
• Influence long-term technology strategy by evaluating emerging tools and practices in a “you build it, you own it” environment.
