About The Position

Flexspring is an iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service) that connects HR systems like payroll, recruiting, benefits, and HRIS platforms API-to-API, enabling clean and near real-time data movement without manual re-entry. Flexspring operates as a remote-first team across Canada and beyond. This co-op opportunity is within the R&D team, offering real-world experience on the company's actual product, shipping features that customers depend on. Many co-ops transition to full-time roles after graduation. The role primarily uses a Java-based stack, emphasizing that integration work involves both coding and business reasoning, as features address specific customer needs for HR data synchronization. The ideal candidate enjoys building shippable products and understanding the purpose behind their work.

Requirements

  • Strong analytical thinking and a focus on understanding the 'why' and customer impact.
  • Thoughtful approach to new tools, including AI, with an ability to review and validate output.
  • Completed a minimum of one co-op term or have relevant professional work experience.
  • Currently studying Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Solid foundation in Java and JavaScript.
  • Some exposure to Spring and JUnit (school projects acceptable).
  • Experience with or knowledge of APIs.
  • Curiosity, motivation, and a desire to solve problems thoroughly.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with REST APIs, React, GraphQL, Groovy, JMS, or SOAP.
  • Interest in integration platforms (iPaaS) and system connectivity.
  • Curiosity about how large systems communicate and potential issues.

Responsibilities

  • Building and improving features in Flexspring's product, understanding the customer problem each feature solves.
  • Writing backend and full stack code in Java and JavaScript.
  • Working with APIs and the data flowing between HR systems.
  • Using modern tooling, including AI, to work efficiently and reviewing AI-generated output.
  • Writing and running tests to ensure work quality before customer release.
  • Collaborating with experienced developers through code reviews and team discussions.
