Frontend Software Engineer, Auth

Nominal•Los Angeles, CA

About The Position

Nominal is hiring a Frontend Software Engineer for its Auth team. The role focuses on building interfaces that help administrators precisely control access to sensitive test data and help users understand what they are permitted to see and do. The engineer will turn a relationship-based authorization system into clear, reliable tools while making a deny-by-default permission model understandable without obscuring its capabilities. The role includes building administrative workflows for roles, users, groups, workspaces, API keys, and data-source access; making permissions visible throughout the product; and developing sign-in experiences that connect Nominal to enterprise identity providers. The engineer will work closely with backend engineers, designers, and product teams to define workflows, shape product direction, validate ideas with users, and make technical and product decisions amid ambiguity. The engineer will own much of the auth frontend end to end and develop scalable frontend architecture using React, TypeScript, and modern web technologies. Work spans application state, data fetching, rendering, and performance, including complex workflows and large datasets. Success requires strong frontend engineering, product judgment, systems thinking, and the ability to make complex capabilities approachable for technical users.

Requirements

  • 3 to 8 years of experience building products for technical users, with involvement in authentication, access control, or similar security domains.
  • Strong experience with TypeScript and modern frontend architecture.
  • Understanding of how frontend systems interact with backend services.
  • Experience building products involving industry-standard authentication flows or working with open-source authorization systems such as AuthZed / SpiceDB.
  • Strong product instincts, including challenging assumptions and considering why a product is being built before deciding how to implement it.
  • A systems mindset and interest in reasoning about data models, user workflows, and complex system behavior before implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain technical and product tradeoffs clearly across engineering, design, and product teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with role-based or relationship-based access control and familiarity with SpiceDB or other Zanzibar-style authorization engines.
  • Comfort with sign-in flows, session management, and enterprise identity standards such as OIDC and SAML.
  • Experience making permission models understandable to end users or designing interfaces where correctness has real consequences.
  • Experience designing products around complex object models, relationships, and workflows rather than simple CRUD interfaces.
  • Ability to understand user goals, simplify complicated workflows, and make thoughtful product decisions under ambiguity.
  • Strong experience with React, TypeScript, modern state management, asynchronous data flows, and scalable application architecture.
  • Comfort reasoning about APIs, data loading strategies, backend constraints, and full-stack architectural tradeoffs.
  • Experience optimizing rendering, managing large datasets, virtualized interfaces, streaming updates, caching strategies, and browser performance.

Responsibilities

  • Build interfaces for administrators to assign roles, manage users and groups, create workspaces, issue and revoke API keys, and control access to data sources.
  • Define workflows and interaction patterns that make the relationship-based permission model understandable and difficult to misconfigure.
  • Make permissions visible throughout the application, including hiding unavailable actions and explaining why users cannot take them.
  • Build sign-in experiences that connect Nominal to customers' enterprise identity providers.
  • Partner with product, design, and engineering to shape product direction, clarify ambiguous ideas, validate workflows with users, and make product and technical decisions.
  • Own much of the auth frontend end to end.
  • Develop scalable frontend architecture using React, TypeScript, and modern web technologies across application state, data fetching, rendering, and performance.
  • Design experiences and information architecture that expose powerful capabilities without overwhelming users.
  • Reason about APIs, data loading strategies, backend constraints, and full-stack architectural tradeoffs.
  • Optimize frontend performance, including rendering, large datasets, virtualized interfaces, streaming updates, caching, and browser performance.

Benefits

  • 100% coverage of medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited PTO and sick leave
  • Free lunch, snacks, and coffee
