Frontend Engineer - Design Systems

Mercury•Portland, OR
•$140,800 - $158,400

About The Position

Mercury's Design Systems team helps product teams build consistent, accessible, and carefully considered interfaces. The Frontend Engineer will evolve shared components and patterns that enable teams across Mercury to turn product ideas into well-crafted software. The role is open to early-career and intermediate engineers, with meaningful project ownership and guidance from experienced teammates. The initial focus is design systems within the broader Design Foundations work. Depending on opportunities and interests, the engineer may also contribute to code-based prototyping and tools that help designers and AI agents work with Mercury's components. AI fluency is an integral part of the team's approach. The role involves collaborating with designers and engineers, building with React and TypeScript, improving components and tokens across Figma and code, and making the design system accessible and easier to adopt. The engineer will also use AI coding tools, assess and test generated code, and share effective approaches with the team.

  • Experience building interfaces and the ability to explain the decisions behind the code.
  • Care for visual craft and how people use software, including interest in accessible interfaces and well-considered interactions.
  • Hands-on fluency with AI coding tools, including providing context, evaluating and improving generated code, and verifying that it works as intended.
  • Ownership, willingness to learn, follow-through, clear communication when help is needed, and openness to feedback.
  • Curiosity about reusable systems and the tradeoffs involved in serving different product needs with shared components.
  • Interest in solving problems with designers and engineers, contributing ideas, and understanding the needs behind a request.
