About The Position

The Head Coach is responsible for helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. The Head Coach reports to the on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison and works under the auspices of the Varsity Head Coach in his/her sport.

Requirements

  • Valid teaching certificate and a bachelor’s preferred.
  • First aid and CPR training required within first two years and maintained thereafter.
  • Experience in teaching, coaching, and sports medicine preferred.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate success in area of application.
  • Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying.
  • Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students.
  • The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  • Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  • Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently.
  • Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels.
  • Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces both indoors and outdoors.
  • Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment.
  • Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.
  • The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the Code of Conduct for Coaches; acts as a positive role model on and off the court/field/site, etc.; Adheres to Playing Fair: A Guide to Title IX in High School and College Sports; Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved; Maintains competency in rules, rule interpretations, meet procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport; Works cooperatively with all TCAPS coaches, athletic directors/LEAP Liaison, and students to ensure a healthy, positive cross town rivalry; Recommends to the on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison teams that may be scheduled and officials to be employed; Works with the Varsity Head Coach and/or on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison to plan transportation and appropriate supervision at away contests in compliance with district travel policy and guidelines;
  • Assists on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison and Varsity Head Coach in recruiting, hiring and evaluating all coaches in his/her sport; Assigns duties to equipment managers, assistant coaches (if applicable), and helpers and evaluates their performance;
  • Maintains an accurate and current squad roster and submits copies to the on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison; Works closely with on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison, Booster Club and Varsity Head Coach in the financing of his/her sport and fundraising efforts for his/her team. Develops a consistent and positive communications procedure through the school and media to inform the parents and the general public about his/her sport; Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season; Arranges for the presentation of team awards through the on-site Athletic Director; Prepares a detailed uniform, equipment and supply request and submits it to the on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison, and maintains a detailed inventory list of uniforms, equipment and supplies; Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork; Submits all grants with approval of central office and Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison, Advises coaches, students and parents of spring and fall opportunities for physicals at a reduced cost;
  • Enforces all rules of the Michigan High School Athletic Association related to his/her sport if applicable. Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students; Establishes performance criteria for participation in interscholastic competition in his/her sport; Checks with Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison on individual athlete’s eligibility;
  • Cooperates with the on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Liaison to verify that no candidate is issued equipment or allowed to practice until his/her physical examination card has been completed and his/her insurance coverage is in effect; Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present; Enforces rules and regulations concerning conditioning of players and their health and safety; Reports injuries to the trainer if applicable and/or completes and submits accident reports to the on-site Athletic Director/LEAP Director; Exercises great care in dealing with all injuries and particularly those that are of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should assure that the injured athlete is receiving competent medical care. Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, the coach should secure the signed approval of the doctor and parent before the athlete is allowed to participate again in athletic activities; Provides supervision of all athletes until they have left the building and/or site; Ensures that all windows, doors, and gates are locked in any area that has been used;
  • Plans all practice sessions and supervises out-of-season conditioning program; Ensures a positive environment free of hazing, harassment, bullying and intimidating language and behaviors; Other duties as required
