Freestyle Ski or Snowboard Coach (Whitefish Mountain Resort)
About The Position
The Freestyle Ski or Snowboard Coach assists with training, safety, competitions, and travel for the Whitefish Mountain Freestyle Team. Most work is conducted outdoors in the on-mountain arena, with additional duties in the competitive teams’ office on the first-floor east end of Ed & Mully’s building. The position is seasonal and may be full-time or part-time, hourly, and non-exempt. The coach helps implement the team training program and coaches athletes with an emphasis on safety, skill development, camaraderie, and fun. The role also supports freestyle event production and the creation and maintenance of freestyle venues, including the jump hill. Travel with and management of teams for away competitions or training may be required multiple times during the season. Additional duties for the Freestyle Manager may include meetings, departmental correspondence, promotion, and athlete-family correspondence.
Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- Coaching or instructing experience; winter sports experience is preferred, but experience in other sports is acceptable.
- High-end new-school freestyle skiing or snowboarding skills and the ability to demonstrate them.
- Knowledge of current new-school freestyle skiing or snowboarding.
- Some freestyle team experience.
- Some on-snow competition experience.
- Compatibility with the freestyle program, athletes, parents, terrain park crew, events, and snow sports departments.
- Acceptable criminal history background, checked after offer and before hire.
- Valid driver's license approved by WSI's insurance company.
- Basic computer experience.
- Ability to ski or snowboard at an advanced level and demonstrate freestyle technique to a certain level.
- Ability to perform movement analysis and coach advanced-level techniques.
- Ability to repeatedly lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift 50 to 80 pounds.
- Ability to climb stairs, and to bend, stoop, and stretch repeatedly.
- Ability to work at a desk or computer workstation for medium periods of 1 to 2 hours.
- Ability to ski or ride while carrying equipment weighing 20 to 80 pounds.
- Ability to work under varying weather conditions, often extreme in nature.
- Subject to WSI's Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse Policy based on the position and related duties.
Nice To Haves
- Higher education.
- USSA/USASA Coaches License.
- USSA, USASA, PSIA, or AASI Coach/Instructor Level I or above certification.
- Freestyle coaching or teaching experience.
- Freestyle jump and/or terrain park feature construction and maintenance experience.
- Freestyle event production experience.
- Past experience as a Freestyle Team member.
- Past freestyle skiing or snowboarding competition experience.
- Knowledge of Whitefish Mountain Resort and the Flathead Valley.
Responsibilities
- Assist in implementing the team training program.
- Coach athletes effectively, emphasizing safety, skill development, camaraderie, and fun.
- Provide leadership and serve as a positive role model for athletes.
- Assist in producing freestyle events at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
- Assist with the creation and maintenance of freestyle venues, including the jump hill.
- Maintain excellent working relationships with other coaches and all mountain departments.
- Perform assigned duties and follow WSI policies, procedures, guidelines, and the Employee Handbook.
- Travel with and manage travel teams in all aspects during away competitions or training, potentially multiple times during the season.
- Assist the Freestyle Manager as needed, including attending meetings and maintaining departmental correspondence, promotion, and athlete-family correspondence.
- Remain alert to unsafe conditions and work behaviors, inspect work and public areas periodically, and report issues for correction.
