About The Position

Assist with training, safety, competitions, and travel for the Whitefish Mountain Freestyle Team. Majority of the work is conducted outdoors in the on-mountain arena, with additional duties in the competitive teams’ office, located on the first-floor east end of Ed & Mully’s building.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required
  • Coaching or instructing experience required (preferably winter sports but other sports acceptable)
  • High-end new school Freestyle skiing/snowboarding skills and ability to demonstrate required
  • Knowledge of current, new school freestyle skiing/snowboarding
  • Compatibility with Freestyle program, athletes, parents, terrain park crew, events, and snow sports departments required
  • Acceptable information regarding criminal history background (Post offer – Pre hire)
  • Valid driver’s license approved by WSI insurance company
  • Basic computer experience
  • Subject to WSI’s Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse Policy based on the nature of the position and related duties
  • Ability to ski or snowboard at an advanced level
  • Ability to demonstrate some Freestyle technique to a certain level
  • Ability to perform movement analysis on athletes in combination with coaching advanced level techniques
  • Ability to lift items weighing 20 pounds repeatedly and up to 50 to 80 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to climb stairs to access work space
  • Requires individual to bend, stoop, and stretch repeatedly
  • Requires individual to work at a desk/computer work station for medium periods of time (1-2 hours)
  • Ability to ski/ride carrying equipment, such as gates, signs, etc., weighing 20 to 80 pounds
  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions, often extreme in nature
  • Job may require working weekends, holidays, and overtime during peak demand times

Nice To Haves

  • higher education preferred
  • USSA/USASA Coaches License preferred
  • USSA/USASA/PSIA/AASI Coach/Instructor level I (or above) certification preferred
  • Freestyle coaching and/or teaching experience preferred
  • Freestyle jump and/or terrain park feature construction and maintenance preferred
  • Freestyle event production experience preferred
  • Past experience as a Freestyle Team member preferred
  • Past Freestyle Skiing/Snowboarding competition experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Whitefish Mountain Resort and the Flathead Valley preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing team training program
  • Effectively coach athletes, emphasizing safety, skill development, camaraderie, and fun
  • Provide good leadership for the athletes; be a positive role model
  • Assist in production of freestyle events at WMR
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of freestyle venues, including the jump hill
  • Maintain excellent working relationship with other coaches and all departments on the mountain
  • Perform assigned duties without adverse reaction or comment
  • Work within the policies, procedures, and guidelines established for WSI; adhere to and support all the information in the WSI Employee Handbook
  • Ability to travel with and manage travel teams in all aspects during away competitions or training, which may involve traveling with the athletes to competitions multiple times throughout the season
  • Assist Freestyle Manager with duties as needed, which may include attending meetings, maintaining departmental correspondence, promotion, and athlete family correspondence
