About The Position

This position assists air and vacuum furnace operators in the casting or master melt process. The role involves preparation and pouring of castings or ingots, along with associated foundry tasks. The Foundry Person works in one or more of the following accountability areas: Preparation, Pouring (Air Casting and Vacuum Furnace Operations), Maintenance, and Safety.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow instructions, read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing thirty to fifty pounds and occasionally up to one hundred and twenty pounds.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to work in difficult working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes, molten metal and other elements for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work under conditions requiring respiratory protection if assigned.
  • Facial hair, temple pieces on glasses, or other items that interfere with the face-to-face seal of a tight-fitting respirator are not permitted if such a respirator is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a Foundry Helper preferred (at LSBO only).
  • Previous experience with overhead cranes hoists preferred (at LSBO only).

Responsibilities

  • Assist air and vacuum furnace operators in the casting or master melt process.
  • Take part in the preparation and pouring of castings or ingots.
  • Perform associated foundry tasks.
  • Inspect and deliver metal ingots to furnace areas.
  • Clean, inspect, and weigh shells.
  • Fixture shells per Tech Cards.
  • Apply exothermic, fiber insulation material to shells.
  • Load and unload shells in burnout furnace using hand-held fork, forklift truck, and overhead crane.
  • Select program on burnout controller for proper preheat cycle.
  • Transport shells to air pouring areas or vacuum furnace.
  • May load melting pots with metals.
  • Inspect and prepare pouring ladles.
  • Shank on ladle to properly position ladle during pouring.
  • Apply insulating material to casting top to maintain molten status.
  • Deliver castings to cleaning or repair departments.
  • Set up and operate mold racks.
  • Knock ingots from molds; clean, cut, and weld ingots.
  • Inspect, set up, and operate MM mold racks.
  • Run conveyor system to transport shells to Master Caster furnace.
  • Observe shell casting process via window and/or video.
  • Knock MM ingots from molds; clean, cut, and weld.
  • Remove and transport vacuum castings.
  • Clean furnaces and maintain foundry areas.
  • Provide minor maintenance and troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Install refractory lining in vacuum furnaces.
  • Adhere to plant and department safety rules.
  • Safely operate all equipment and tools.
  • Identify and report safety problems.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
