About The Position

Oversees the metal shop and foundry operations at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt). This role involves understanding and enforcing safety protocols, serving as a foundry-specific resource for students, and assisting with various stages of the metal casting process. The Foundry Monitor will work with faculty and teaching assistants to ensure the smooth operation of the foundry, including the ceramic shell system, slurry mixing, and material inventory. Additionally, the role requires maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the wax room and metal shop, and providing assistance with metalworking outside of class hours.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of shop safety and tools/machinery
  • Eligible to work in the US at the time of employment
  • Complete all onboarding tasks including a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background review
  • Provide proof of eligibility to work in the US by completing the Form 19, Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986
  • Show proof of identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of the start of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Serve as a foundry specific resource, including but not limited to: wax / spruing help, sand mold / gating help, dipping ceramic shell, chip out / sandblasting, metal finishing, patina, etc.
  • Other problem solving as it arises
  • Check in with the Associate Professor to set time once / week to assess what needs attention

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the ceramic shell system
  • Supervise mixing slurry
  • Coordinate with TAs and Iron Corps for mixing crew
  • Set and employ viscosity check schedule
  • Maintain stucco bins and encourage students to riddle
  • Act as a contact person for issues with the tank
  • Inventory and stock materials
  • Help keep the wax room clean and organized
  • Encourage students to scrape tables after use
  • Encourage proper storage of projects
  • Recycle wax
  • Provide metal shop/foundry supervision and safety oversight
  • Be available for metalworking help outside of class
  • Keep die grinders (and wrenches) organized
  • Inventory abrasives for ordering and re-stocking
  • Maintain stock of carbide burrs and lend them out for use
