Forward Deployed Engineer

Base Power Company•Austin, TX

About The Position

Base is a next-generation power company deploying a network of distributed batteries to help build a more resilient electricity grid. The Forward Deployed Engineer embeds with the teams and partners involved in launching new markets, learns how their operations work, and builds the software and workflows needed to make each launch successful. This can include work ranging from partner spreadsheets and BaseOS to battery firmware. Insights from launches are shared with the Core Experience and Platform teams so the overall system improves with each market. The role may embed with Growth teams and partners, Deployments teams and installer partners, or Utilities and Markets teams and utility partners. Work includes building and improving market-specific integrations, tools, workflows, data pipelines, and partner-facing products; using grid data to inform battery deployment and dispatch decisions; and helping make subsequent state launches faster. Base is an in-person startup where priorities and responsibilities may evolve with business needs.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience building production software in product or full-stack engineering roles.
  • Strong frontend and full-stack skills, with familiarity across modern web applications, APIs, data models, and stateful user experiences.
  • Strong product judgment and a track record of turning ambiguous ideas into useful, shipped products.
  • Experience in 0-to-1 or fast-moving environments where user needs, product direction, and success metrics are changing.
  • Experience using product analytics, experimentation, and data to guide decisions.
  • Intensity, urgency, and a high bar for the quality of one's work.
  • Willingness to work in person.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside internal teams and partners to understand how work is performed and identify where processes break down.
  • Help prioritize problems and determine whether they are best addressed with software or process improvements.
  • Build end-to-end software, including integrations, internal tools, workflows, data pipelines, and partner-facing products.
  • Develop prototypes quickly and harden successful solutions so other teams can rely on them.
  • Work with utility partners on grid constraints and data, and build tools that support decisions about battery deployment and dispatch.
  • Launch new states by establishing the partner integrations, workflows, and data required for each market, while making future launches faster.
  • Share learnings from market launches with the Core Experience and Platform teams.
