Forward Deployed AI Engineer

Lunon•New York, NY
•Remote

About The Position

Lunon is an AI-native consulting firm headquartered in New York City and backed by General Catalyst. The company embeds engineers inside client businesses to build and deliver software, staying until it can operate without them. Its open-source research system ranks first on DeepResearch Bench. The team is young, moves quickly, uses new tools, and expects team members to own their work end to end. The Forward Deployed AI Engineer owns the model side of client engagements: selecting suitable models, adapting them to client data, validating their performance, and making them efficient and affordable to run. The engineer works alongside a Forward Deployed Data Engineer, who owns the data. The first engagement is helping an ERP company make its product AI-native. The role is fully remote and US-based.

Requirements

  • Experience fine-tuning or post-training a model and being able to explain what worked and what did not.
  • Experience building evaluations that influenced a decision.
  • Experience shipping LLM features that real users depend on.
  • Experience serving a model in production, with attention to cost and latency.
  • Daily use of AI coding tools and ability to judge results by the system and its output rather than the programming language.

Nice To Haves

  • Built on or integrated with an ERP, CRM, or accounting system.
  • Shipped extraction or search over messy business documents.
  • Experience in consulting, agency, or forward-deployed work, including being useful within a client organization from the second day.

Responsibilities

  • Select appropriate models for each task, including frontier APIs and open-weight models, and determine when fine-tuning is preferable to prompt improvements.
  • Fine-tune models when worthwhile using supervised fine-tuning, preference optimization, and parameter-efficient methods such as LoRA.
  • Build evaluation harnesses and benchmarks to determine whether changes improve results.
  • Take models from training through serving, tuning inference cost, latency, and quality.
  • Work with client teams to identify where AI can improve business outcomes and decline work that is unlikely to pay back.
