About The Position

The Food Shelf Laborer/Driver position is a physically demanding role requiring hard work, commitment, reliability, and dependability. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the food shelf, involving consistent heavy lifting (over 50 pounds), operating pallet jacks, and driving a box truck and transit van. Key responsibilities include stocking shelves, sorting produce, moving product, assisting clients, handling donations, light cleaning, and supporting various food shelf projects and distributions. The role requires knowledge of all food shelf areas and the ability to substitute as needed. This position is crucial for maintaining adequate food supply and supporting community needs.

Requirements

  • Must have a VALID Driver's License.
  • Must be able to drive and operate a box truck and transit van.
  • Must be able and willing to lift over 50 pounds consistently.
  • High school education, post-secondary training, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in a related industry.
  • Knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of conflict resolution, customer service, and outreach.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and regional community services programs.
  • Skill in working effectively with persons of diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Skill in maintaining composure and working effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Skill in collaborating as a team member with colleagues, staff, and community representatives.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
  • A valid Minnesota State Driver's License, proof of insurance, and review of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) report is required.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Unload donation deliveries and food bank deliveries, tracking weights as appropriate.
  • Sort produce for the shopping floor and cooler.
  • Sort and stock deliveries, including stocking the shopping area.
  • Assist clients through the food shelf to select food items.
  • Perform light daily cleaning, including sweeping, mopping, and emptying garbage/recycling bins.
  • Act as a backup driver to pick up retail rescue food from local grocery stores and donation drives.
  • Assist with mobile food shelf operations, including packing, delivering, and preparation.
  • Assist with food deliveries, including multiple food distributions in the service area.
  • Provide guidance and support for community service workers and county work program employees.
  • Assist the Food Shelf Manager with daily tasks and shift work focus when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff, clients, partners, and volunteers.
  • Assist with community projects as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
