About The Position

The Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, VA Medical Center is hiring seasonal Food Service Workers to serve customers in its cafes and retail markets. The role involves preparing beverages and a variety of food items, following customer orders or supervisors’ instructions and approved procedures, and maintaining a clean, sanitary work area. Workers may encounter varying hot and cold temperatures.

Requirements

A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
Ability to stand constantly, walk, and bend frequently.
Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.
Excellent customer service skills.
Must serve a one-year trial period and receive written certification to continue employment after the trial period.
Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
Subject to background and security investigation.

Nice To Haves

At least one year of experience in the food service industry is preferred but not necessary.

Responsibilities

Prepare beverages such as coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
Prepare and assemble food items such as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
Prepare foods according to customer orders or supervisors’ instructions and approved procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
