About The Position

Muscatine Schools is hiring a Food Service Worker III for Jefferson Elementary. This position is scheduled for 7.5 hours/day with an approximate schedule of 6:00am - 1:30pm (subject to change based on department needs). A Food Service worker is assigned to work 9 months/year, while school is in session. All essential functions must be performed on-site. Bilingual preferred or highly desired. All positions are open until filled. The starting wage for this position will be $16.57/hour. All employees of MCSD are required to complete a background check and pre-employment training and orientation with the Human Resources Department prior to hire. The Food and Nutrition Worker III is not an entry-level position. Responsibilities may vary depending on the building and on the experience of the employee(s) on site but are illustrative of the variety and types of duties that a person in this position may be required to perform. The Food Service Worker III may supervise one or more Food Service Workers levels I and II. All persons handling food must practice standards for sanitation and safety in the day-to-day operation of the department.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • This position requires that the employee be extremely customer service oriented and organized
  • Must genuinely like working with and around children, grades PreK-12
  • Must have working knowledge of computers
  • Must know the basics of USDA Food Service Requirements
  • Competency in the SNAP Computer Food Service System
  • Must attend workshops for certification and maintain working knowledge of the kitchen and daily work schedule
  • Comfortable operating an oven, stovetop, can opener, microwaves, garbage disposal, dishwasher
  • Must following safety and sanitation procedures including wearing uniform, hairnet, and sturdy non-ski shoes
  • Must be very safety conscious
  • Must become certified through the School Nutrition Association.
  • Must pass Food and Nutrition Department standardized assessment.
  • All Food and Nutrition workers are required to complete a Food Service Sanitation course after ninety (90) days of employment.
  • It is required that each worker assigned to a production or bulk satellite kitchen complete the applied food service sanitation, fundamentals of child nutrition and principles of food preparation courses.

Responsibilities

  • May organize or supervise or assist in setting up service areas, portioning and/or serving food items.
  • May organize, supervise or assist in preparing various food service tools, such as cleaning and storing of eating utensils, trays, pans, and other kitchen equipment.
  • May organize, supervise or assist in preparing foods, cooking meat, cleaning and preparing fruits and vegetables, buttering bread, making sandwiches etc.
  • May use various pieces of kitchen equipment such as dishwashing machines, where available, ovens and other cooking equipment.
  • Coordinates site control of food and supply costs through proper handling and storage techniques.
  • Communicates and works with fellow employees as well as maintains good public relations with students, parents, faculty and the community.
  • May take deposits for snap-cards or cash for elementary student meals and may fill out daily ticket/cash reconciliation report.
  • As employee coordinates the site, this person must set tone for friendliness and service.
  • This person must also practice all standards for sanitation, safety and day-to-day operating procedures.
  • Coordinates all site employee schedules to insure rotation of duties.
  • At High School location, the Food Service Worker III position requires daily communication with each site to insure that all amounts of items are on hand or ordered in a timely manner such as daily inventory sheets, daily logs, bread orders, and other day to day supplies.
  • Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed.
