About The Position

The Virginia Department of Education is looking for a FOIA Specialist to support the agency's FOIA Officer in work related to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Virginia Public Records Act (VPRA) as well as other office- and agency-specific policies. The FOIA Specialist will work collaboratively with the FOIA Officer and other staff to ensure FOIA requests are tracked and fulfilled quickly, prudently, and effectively.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act and related privacy laws.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and document management systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple requests and meet strict deadlines.
  • Experience handling confidential or sensitive information with discretion.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of and/or experience in public education system preferred.
  • Excellent communication, research, and administrative skills and be able to support time-sensitive and confidential information management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in processing, tracking, and responding to FOIA requests within required statutory deadlines
  • Communicate with requesters to clarify requests when needed
  • Review documents for responsiveness and assisting in redaction of sensitive or exempt information
  • Maintain organized records of FOIA activity and request logs
  • Draft routine correspondence and summaries related to FOIA matters
  • Provide general administrative and project-based support to the FOIA Officer
